Show V " m Pool is just one of the popular activities available at the Garfield Development Center as Verd Opened in September of 1978, the Development Center in Panguitch serving senior citizens of Garfield County has met with considerable success. Open daily, the center offers hot meals and varied recreational activities for those 55 and over. One of the primary functions of the center is to help members help one another. Operated almost entirely by volunteers, members contribute by carpooling, helping in the kitchen, salting and scraping icy sidewlks that normally present a hazard to elderly citizens, along with numerous other services. Members keep the billiard tables busy and Worthen, left and Lynn Dickson prove. The center is becoming increasingly popular- Successful Operation Noted at Garfield Development Center quilting, macrame, group bingo, and other games also occupy their time. Prepared by a professional cook, a hot lunch is served daily to between .40 and ,60 .people attending and .delivered to an additional 14 to 8 shut ins at their homes. Advantages of the center were acknowledged by several who said they had been able to come out of their shells and appreciated the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends. Many have music in common and the piano is rarely quiet. Old members have been encouraged to bring their friends and neighbors and these new people have helped to spark an even greater enthusiasm within the group. Those who participate prefer to be thought of as members rather than guests so that they feel freer to help each other. It was noted that more input is needed as to preferences so that the range and scope of activities can be increased. |
