Show PanguitchLake Road ProposedFor Inclusion In State Highway System Members of the Iron and Garfield County Commissions and the Panguitch Chamber of Commerce have asked the State Road Commission to recommend to the Utah Legislature that the county road between Panguitch and Cedar Breaks be placed on the state highway system. The request was made at the State Road Commission's regularly scheduled meeting in Cedar City. The recently constructed road connects skiers at the Brian Head ski resort with the 1,000 bed capacity of Panguitch Inns. Panguitch Chamber of Commerce President Jon Torgerson said that Garfield and Iron counties are not able to provide winter maintenance on the road. He said the people of Panguitch and Garfield counties worked very hard to get the road constructed. "We feel it will all be In vain if the road is not kept open In winter." Torgerson said the road provides skiers in southern Utah and northern Arizona with a shorter route to Brian Head than Is currently offered by U-14. D. F. Houston, Panguitch businessman, said that the energy crisis caused economic depression in the southern Utah area and that "being able to keep this highway open will rejuvenate Panguitch business." State Highway Engineer C, V. Anderson pointed out that the Cedar Breaks to Panguitch road was constructed as a county collector road, and is paralleled by U-14. He said these two factors may complicate the eligibility of the road as a state highway. The State Road Commission ordered District Five Engineer Alex Mansour, Cedar City, and District Three Engineer BUI Hurley, Richfield, to Jointly meet with the two County Commissions to determine If the road qualifies for a request to the legislature that It be placed on the state system. |
