Show Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVKY Spring came in like a lamb and it is wonderful to see Na- ture come back to life. It is be coming dry and dusty, we need gentle showers. The sick are all better, we visited briefly with Harvey Lis-ton at the Elvonn Poulsen home, he looks good. He had a recurrance of gout and went to the hospital for emergency treatment but said his toe was better. Members of the S. J. Al-vey family, Dee and Elda Haws went to Roy for the funeral services of Ludeen Alvey. Arnold and Deon took Dad and Mother up Monday and stayed all week, the rest of us went Wednesday and back Thursday. Dee and Elda visited their kids in Gunnison on the way up and stayed overnight in Salt Lake City with her sister, Elsie Fitts. Minnie Davis and Robert picked up Leda Mae and Michelle Foster for the trip. I spent the night in Mapleton with my kids and accompanied them to the services which were beautiful. Dee Haws was one of the speakers. The large crowd and bushels of flowers showed that they had many friends, which Ray L. really needs now more than ever. Wanda and Ethan Hansen drove from Kennewick Washington. Many former residents of Escalante were at the viewing and services, talked to Ernel Porter and his brother-in-law Poulter. Three of the daughters of Jack and Angela Woolsey hunted us up, Corine, Carey and Jackie. . Last week Neta and Morris Shirts went north for the graduation exercises of their grand daughter, Brenda Sorensen Ka-rren. She graduated from Utah Technical College as a pra ctical nurse and has an offer of employment at the hospital in American Fork, where they live, her husband works for the City. Art and Carol Joy Cooper and family came from Texas for spring vacation and divided their time between here and Panguitch. They all went back except Carol Joy and her tiny daughter who will stay awhile hoping to find a ride back with conference visitors. Ray Shurtz is back home, Betty Schow and Vivian Col-lard brought him on the weekend, He was so homesick they figured getting home would be good therapy. He is still in a wheel chair and if helped to his feet can shuffle along with a walker. He is at the Chase Shurtz home. Stan and Neta Haycock, Clarice and Ernie Griffin went to Las Vegas to visit the Doug Haycocks and the LaVern Griffins. Enroute home the Clem Griffins met them in Cedar City and took Clarice to Salt Lake City for minor surgery. Lynn Schow is home from Germany. He is released from the service and has entered col lege at SUSC. He and his family visited Ron and Evan over the weekend. The Leo Wilsons had a visit from a missionary companion of their son Robert in San Jose, California. He is Elder Bennett, a grandson of Senator Bennett. He and some friends were touring this area and called on the Wilsons. Dale Wilson has made two flying trips to Grand Junction, Colorado and one to St George. Susan Wilson and Marjorie Spencer made two trips to Boulder on school business. DUP meeting was held last week a bit off schedule, the lesson was given by LaRue Spencer and she was sustained as assitant class leader to assist me. Gary Fontaln had Seminary meetings in Cedar City, his family accompanied him. Wei-do Woolsey came from Farm-ington, New Mexico, to bring Mason Lyman home. Lillian and Alice Ann Lyman went to Las Vegas for medical checkups "and to help their mother, Delia Christiansen , celebrate her birthday. Hllo and Lettle Boyce had a weekend visit from daughters Leona Spencer of Pjovo, Ardith Alexander of Ogden and Cheryl Stander of Plains City. Hilo is preparing to go North for eye surgery. Joe .and Sandy Carter have a baby girl born in Phoenix, Arizona. Blake Robinson had horse business in Vernal. The Robinsons had a visit from Ben and Renee Porter of Provo and Ruth Baugh of Tropic. John and Yukon Norman went to Monroe for the wedding of John's nephew Del Ray Gunnell then went on to Richfield for Yukon's treatment. Kay Gates of Vernal visited his folks Jim and Erma and brought pictures of that new son. Ladles putting on quilts were Gurena Robinson, Nelda Willis, Ruth Alvey and Twila Mclnelly. Twila went to Cedar City to visit Grena and Mike Searle. The annual Sophomore Skid was held Friday with an impor ted dance band called the "Soft Whites". It was semi-formal and complete with decorations. Jim Spencer came here for a special awards assembly to present the State Consolation award to our local team. Coach Tom Kohler and Dal Listen wen to Salt Lake City for a banquet honoring the boys voted prep of the week. Dal was presented a planue and they (continued Inside) Escalantt (tuntinued from lrunt page) were guests at the game between the Stars and Denver Rockets. Brent Cottam got on the All State team from the "A" schools. Neal and Albert Liston took Dal, they stayed in Sandy overnight with Quinn and Donene Griffin. Neal and Alberta tried to find the rest home where Mildred Schow stays, they were unsuccessful so called Marlow Schow who took them there and got Mildred and they all went to the Schow home for a visit. They also visited Harvey Liston at the Poulsen home and were glad to see him looking so well. A work day was held Satur day at the Welfare farm, it was a stake affair, but some wards were not too well represented. Dinner was served to the workers. The oil rig in the Camp Flats area is being torn down which puts some men out of work. The coming of spring Is a thrill, but the air silll carries a chill. Some shed heavy clothes get a cold in the nose and wind up with shots and a pill. |
