Show SEEDLINGS FOR DIXIE NATIONAL FOREST The Dixie National Forest has recently received a shipment of approximately 220,000 tree seedlings from the Lucky (continued on back page) (continued from front page) Peak Nursery in Boise, Idaho, and 180,000 tree seedlings from the Coeur d'Alene Nursery in Idaho. The 400,000 tree seedlings will be planted throughout the Dixie National Forest to reforest areas burned over by wildfires, or areas which have been recently logged. The seed used to grow these small trees was collected on the Dixie National Forest and then shipped to the nurseries in Idaho. Seedlings are grown until they are two or three years old and then shipped to the Forest where they are planted in the same general area where they were originally produced as seed. Species of seedlings being planted are Engelmann spruce, ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. Spruce will be planted at elevations ranging from 9,000 to 10,500 feet. Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir will be planted at elevations ranging from 7,000 to 9,000 feet. Some ponderosa pine will be planted In areas of hugh public use, such as campgrounds and Ranger stations. |
