Show Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY Finally got some moisture in the form of gentle rains which settled the dust but did not wet down very far. The lilacs are starting to bloom and everything looks brighter. Most of the sick are holding their own; Blake Robinson had another heart attack which looked serious but between Dr. Kazan and Nelda Willis they got him resting easier without moving him to the hospital. The Coleman people here got word of the death of their mother, Esther Coleman In Wayne County, she passed away quietly In her sleep. Bob and Sharon Carlson started to Delta where Bernard and Ora Schow are; it was so stormy, snow in some areas, they went to Cedar City then came home. Verda and Beu-mont Griffin went to Richfield and met Verna and Shanon Partridge from Salt Lake City and spent the weekend together. Billle Davis, Melvin Alvey, Vernon Spencer, and Dale Marsh went to St. George to attend a Five County meeting. The Alfred Chionos and the Elmer Smiths had business in Richfield and Cedar City. Bruce and Beth Burr entertained friends at a fish fry. The relatives of Bill Haws got word that he had been back in the hospital for treatment of his back. Betty Alvey and daughter Irene went to St George for dental appointments. Diane Alvey took some horses to Salt Lake City, Rayel came from Roy to help her with them. The Hode Alveys had a visit from Merle and Venice Hansen of Salt Lake City. Gordon and Almeda Haycock and Nell Barker had business In Pangultch. George and Shirley Norton of Tooele, their son Lt. Phillip D. Norton, his wife Pamela and infant son Jamie of Quantlco, Virginia visited here last week. Shirley is the daughter of Ma-ble and Charley Haycock who lived where the S. J. Alveys now live. They got the Alveys to take them out to see their property southeast of town and enjoyed stories of days gone by. Mr. and Mrs. Elwln Robinson of Salt Lake visited at the Blake Robinson home. Mark LIston went to Salt Lake City seeking employment. Nancy Droubay and family, Judy Kelly and family were also In Salt I.ake City. Starns ad Fon Me-chain spent a week In Las Vegas then brought Linda and the kids home for a week, Ron came for Mother's Day and took them back. Hal and Gen-eal Shurtz had family mem-bers home; Vlcki and Kim Nelson and daughter, Stan and Valeree Huntington, all from Cedar City. , Calvin and Laretta a Shurtz had Ivan and Klea and daughter, Dorthy and Newell Cowles and son home. The Cowles people visited Daniel and Orilla. C. R, and Ruby Griffin went to Provo to visit Jim nd Janet Spencer and family. Harry Sooty' Is back after spending the v.1n!er In Calif. Yukon Nor-man has Una's three boys, her husband Is in a hosplttJ In Reno, Nevada. Karen Cottam, Unco Hatch and Evelyn Lyman were home for the weekend. Mack and Jo Barney and family were here for the weekend. Donald and Wanda Lee and family spent the weekend in Pangultch. PTA meeting was held and new officers elected; Judy Brooks Is president, Loraine Behanln vice president, and Mary Errett secretary; the Elementary school put on an entertaining program. Mary Errett Is a hard lady to keep up with, just got it reported that she was working in the Alvey cafe and went down to Mun-son's store and found her clerking there. Lorell and Nelda have gone on a Garkane trip to Washington, D.C. Mildred Adair had Sharon and Bill Francisco and family here for the weekend. Mildred's son Milton Woolsey was chosen a member of Phi Delta Cappa National Profess-ional Education Fraternity from the Orange County District. It is quite an honor as there is only one chosen each year. The Ranal Lymans son Blaine has been made Zone Leader in Greenville, South Carolina. The Beryl Shurtz home had Carlyle and family here from Sandy. Ann Munson spent a week In California, then De-Lane and Leah Griffin met her In Cedar City to bring her home. DeLane Is a man with sound reasoning power, that Is probably why he was made Bishop; he needed to go down the desert to look after the cattle but Leah was sick and he hated to leave her but he finally said he would go anyway and when he got back she would either be dead or alive, and she was. Heard by way of the grapevine that the County paper has an avid reader who gets amused over the downfall of another human being, namely Ches Lay falling off the cemetery fence. This reader's name is Kathy and she works with Na-dene Anderson at Geneva Steel. Don Heap held open house for the parents of the seminary students, Malen and Angela Mecham were here from Tropic. Speakers In the North ward Sacrament meeting were Lorenzo Griffin, Randal Lyman and Leland Haws, a trio by Marlene Haws, Geraldine LIston and Deon Alvey, accompanied by Areola Gates. The South ward listened to Berlin Osborn, Elmo Bushnell and El-lb LeFevre, Leah Griffin read a poem. Both wards had appro prlate programs in Sunday School to honor the Mothers. Reverend Gowan of Cedar City comes In to hold meetings for the Escalante Christian Fellowship Society, they meet In the homes and have a good attendance. Sisters Virginia and Teracine cams from Page to be overnight visitors of Lola Zenz. Lola, Melba Gates and Clella Woolsey went to St. George for entertainment. Utah White House Conference for the Aging are holding a meeting In Salt Lake City, Ivan Willis was chosen as a delegate to represent this area, Nelda accompanied him even if (continued inside) ESCALANTE (continued from front page) she did not like that one word, aging. The Frank Imlays also did their celebrating early; Francis and Barbara and family came bringing steaks and visited before moving to Delta where Francis Is to operate a Phillips 66 station. Walt and Virginia Dano went to Las Vegas to spend the weekend with family members. Leah Button and son Wayne went to Richfield. Wanda and Ethan Hansen of Kennewick, Washington came for a short visit, their son Lyn came from Provo where he is attending BYU and brought another student named Vickl from Montana. Wanda got us all back on the Straight and Narrow and also Instructed us how to wear panty hose to eliminate bagging. According to Coach Bart Palmer the boys won some recognition at the track meets; the first week at Pangultch Kay Lyn Shurtz took the region In the pole vault Jumping 11 feet, Dee Norman took first In the high jump and javalln throw. The second week 4 records were broken In the Jr. High division, In the 8:80 relay run by Johnny Alvey, Dahl Liston, Ma-cky Dese and Reed Munson. The 4:40 by Gary Lane Liston, Sheldon Steed, Wayne Pollock and Noel Lyman. The 2:20 by Johnny and Macky. The boy3 who took 6 first places and 0 second places were Mark Jep-sen, Macky Dese, Johnny Alvey, Larry Spencer, Dahl Liston, Gary Lane Liston, Jerry Taylor, Gary Griffin and Noel Lyman. Now if this Is not Just right do not blame coach, it is because my notes got cold. DeRay and Lizzie Porter had business in Salt Lake City. Gwen Lyman, Millie Mclnelly and Ann White went to Boulder to model the clothing they made In Vaunda's sewing class. Betty R. Alvey and Lizzie Porter went over to represent the Stake Relief Society In their meeting. Guy and Twila Lemming and son Lynn went to Salt Lake City, Leda Emery accompanied them. Slim let me go to Richfield Saturday with him and we fought snow and rain in streaks all day. Areola and Pratt Gates were there the same day. Dee and Elda Haws were there another day. Paul Steed had business In Georgia, then went to Washington, D.C. where he met Bob Sorensen and together they presented an Interesting case to the senators and other executives and their findings will be presented at a meeting on Thursday at 8 p.m. In the Elementary school. Missed last week the christening of the baby daughter of Dean and Ja-nls Gledhill; the great grandfather Ray Griffin did the honors. That once a year embarrass- ment has come and gone once more, we mothers have been showered with nice things from the store, songs were sung and speeches made in praise of Mother Dear, the only time that I feel small is this time of the year. |
