Show v. i Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY We had two days of 100 degree weather then the wind blowed up a little storm with all the sound effects. Jim Gates and Andrew Spencer are home from the hospital. Jim is scheduled to go North to a specialist. Mr. Jim Crandall is still hospitalized and about the same. Louise Liston had major surgery in Cedar City. When they got inside information they found her appendix was ready to rupture so she had three different problems taken care of. She is back home and feeling as good as could be expected. Kenneth Shurtz was the victim of a freak accident; he was carrying a shovel on his ten speed bike and hit one of those numerous chuck holes in the road which throwed him end over end. He had on swimming trunks which were not much protection so he is bruised badly. Marjorie Griffin did not think he had any broken bones but they were going to have him x-rayed. His little sister Stephanie swallowed a straight pin so Geneal figured they had more than their share of bad luck. Stan and Valeree Huntington and two kids and Julie stayed here overnight but they were not considered bad luck. Vernon and Hazel Griffin went to Delta and brought daughter Shona Woolsey and baby home to stay to recover from her heart attack. Alfred Chiono went to Salt Lake City to visit Bonnie who is still hospitalized. Mary Davis took her baby to Dr. Dugglns, she had a cherry pit in her nose. If you noticed Deon Alvey walking lopsided it is because one shoulder is one big bruise; she was dog-sitting and had it on a leash and it dragged her between two parked cars where she came in contact with a very solid mirror. Deon and her girls and Mabel Griffin went to Loa to visit at the Clell Duncan home to get acquainted with Janeen's future in-laws. The Starns Mechams had son Ronald and family here from Las Vegas for the weekend. Ronald was scheduled for nose surgery Monday morning at Cedar City. Hal Barker came from Salt Lake City and brought Myrna and the kids to stay awhile. Holbert Smith came with him to visit at the Billle Davis home. Melba and Arlis Brooks had business in Colorado so took grandsons Kay and Jay to visit their other grandparents. Jim Crandall had a visit from Calvin Heaton and family from Orlndo, California. Calvin is the son of one of Jim's friends and they had not seen each other for about 30 years. They visited Mrs. Crandall at the hospital. Sherrlll and Dorothy Jean Alvey and part of their family of Layton visited the Christensens here. Marlyn Shurtr has gone to summer school at SUSC. The Bill Griffins and Camllle Griffin havo new cars. Gerald and Norma Black of Kennewlck, Washington are here visiting relatives, the first time in 4 years. Emet Torter had a visit from Dick and Dorene Schow of Keams. The Jed Smiths had a visit from his brother, Van and wife. The family of Parley Coleman held their reunion at Single Tree camp ground. It was under the direction of Hy-rum and Mary Ellen and there were 80 present. Fern & Chloe did not make it. Everything went fine until they were preparing the last meal and the rain came. They had a slick time getting off the mountain. The Don Colemans got word that former residents Ron and Del Whiting have a new baby girl. The Otto Roundys had son Vernon Dean and family here from Monroe. Doris Walton of Butte, Montana, was here visiting her sister Laretta Spencer, she has been touring the surrounding states visiting relatives all by herself. The Forest Service flew Grant Spencer to Wyoming so Laretta and the kids went on vacation visiting in Provo and Salt Lake City. Wilmer Baker and family came from Provo to take charge of the family reunion starting at Calf Creek with a mutton fry, then to Boulder to church and wound up at the old Baker homestead now owned by Alfred Jepsen. They had a picnic built around fried chicken under the silver maple trees in the yard. The Heaps reunion was held in Maple Grove with 85 In attendance, they were mostly Griffins and Bakers. They camped two nights and held a swimming party at the Sallna pool. Those going from here were Clarice, Mary and LaVern Griffin, Stan and Neta Haycock and Janice and granddaughter Charlene. The Haws reunion was held at Calf Creek with 55 present, some of the more hardy ones hiked to the Falls, and the rest wished they had gone, when the group returned and told of skinny dipping and all kinds of fun. Delmar Cottam went to Las Vegas to check on his home there, it was ok. Cindy and Gary Fontain and two children spent 12 days in Provo with his sister and husband, Joyce and Hans Kelling. They spent the 4th there and did Temple work the other days. They brought nephew Sven and his dog back for a vacation. Erma Gates called saying she took Jim to Pangultch to the Doctor, and here we gave Marjorie Griffin the credit, sorry bout that, Erma. Kay Gates came from Vernal to bring a horse and check on his dad. Quite a group went to Boulder for their celebration which went off very well. Some of our boys, Brent Owens, Em-morn Dodds, Rick Haes and Johnny Alvey did some riding in the rodeo. Johnny took first place in the Junior division. Emmorn and Rick were the clowns. Bill Griffin and family furnished the music for the dance at Calf Creek. Bruce Wilson and his hat, Ross Woolsey and his fringed boots put on seperate floor shows. The Lorenzo Griffins had son Lewis and some family members here from Provo. Jean did not come as she was involved in Relief Society work. In Skcrument meeting Sunday the South Ward speakers were the Stake Presidency; Lo-rell Munson, Berlin Osborn and Cllve Bybee.
