Show Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY The mud is fairly well healed up except on the North sides where there Is still snow. lizzie Porter Is back in the hospital, they don't seem to be able to get her ailment under control. Dorothy Wayne had back surgery at the Holy Cross hospital In Salt Lake City. Koleen came home and said Dorthy would have to be inactive for six months. Forest and Ruth Alvey joined LaDell and Karen in Kanab and all went to Phoenix. They cut their trip short as LaDell and Karen wanted to attend the tounament In Provo. Ruth got word that Rex Allen was going Into the hospital for surgery right away. Frank and Id-ella Imlay are home after visiting their Kids in Delta; Barbara was in a car wreck near Nephl, that could have been very serious: She had her two girls and a neighbor girl and was coming home when a deer appeared in the road, she swerved to avoid it and went off the road down an embankment hitting a cement abute-ment. They were taken to the Nephl hospital, examined and kept overnight then released to the Delta Doctor. Barbara had whiplash so is in a neck brace. One of her girls was quite badly bruised up and the other unhurt. The Neighbor girl had severe cuts and bruises on her face but not serious. Frank and Idella stayed until they were feeling better then came home. They were all worried about Glen's daughter, Frankle Lou, who flew to Texas to join her husband who has employment there. They were afraid the stork would beat the plane. Golda Cottam and Kathy Woolsey went to Pangultch to meet Boyd Cottam who had a few days off from the service Others having business in Pangultch were Elda Haws, Phyllis Alvey and daughter Terry. Qulnn Griffin and Jerry Moun-teer spent several days In Cedar City. The college kids came home for a quarter break. Wil-ford Roe came home with Thais Griffin to attend the par-ty, he was Joined by his sisters Mary Porter find Verna. Clifford Heaps and his sister Dema came for the party. Earl and Nethella Woolsey went to the eye doctor in Salt Lake City. They visited fam-ily members In Kearns and went to Hunter to see Dorthy and Lowell Willis In their new home. Vergene and Carolyn Porter spent the weekend in Mesa. Gloria Gracie and girls Bonnie Lile and son visited at the Theron Mitchell home. Andrew and Isabell Spencer and some friends came from St. George so did Billie Barker and Wife. Dorthy and Newell Cowles brought Calvin Shurtz home from Richfield and stayed for the weekend. Harvey and Evadean Liston came from Wayne County and opened up their home for family members; ElVonn and Ut-ahna Poulson came from Salt Lake City, Jim and Lola Alvey from Mapleton. Steve and La-Vee Wiscombe and six kids of Orem spent the weekend here. When it came party time Steve had everything except trousers. We contacted Jim but he had no spares so Harvey Liston loaned him a pair, he would not go to the dance, said he doubted that Harvey's pants could dance his way. LaVee said ahe got the important things like a belt and tie. The Bill Griffins had Boyd and Trudy and son home in time for Boyd to be on the program which was quite a success considering the short preparation. It was put on by the two Griffin families, Bill's and Delane's, Hal and Geneal Shurtz, Randal Lyman, the Gordon Stakers, the Gary Fon-tains and a masked fire-fighter who kept appearing. The roast beef dinner was delicious and served to around 200 by a dedicated group of hard working cooks who were appreciated by everyone who likes good food. Most folks probably got too full to attend the dance as there were not many out. Bill Griffin's family provided the music. Visitors at the Hyrum Coleman home were Ada and Alfred Heaps and Dolly Mulforl, family members of Mary Ellen. Dale and Thclma Marsh had Warren and Kathleen Woolsey and boys from Cedar City. The Blake Robinsons had Ben and Renee Porter of Provo, Ruth and Mate Baugh of Tropic. Park and Laree Shurtz and part of the family were here, Hortense Munson wanted to come but her doctor would not let her, so she stayed up north and worked on quilts. The Be-umont Griffins had Shannon and Verna Partridge from St. George. Elmer Mooseman wanted to come but his doctor objected. LaRue Spencer bad Kenneth and Reta home from Cedar City. The Orland. Por-ters have grandson Steven King here from Phoenix. Shirlee Spencer took daughter Tammy to Pangultch to have her tonsils out. Ernie and Betty Hill and three kids came from Duchesne for the weekend and took Janis Gledhlll (continued inside) ESCALANTE (continued from front poge) and two kids back with them. Their son Bruce is still in the service. Emmorn Dodds sent word from Albuquerque, New Mexico, that he had taken first place in Bare Back Riding at a Rodeo there. Stanley and Marlene Stowe and son were here for the week-end, Lane Stowe brought some friends home with him. Nell Barker came home and Twila Mclnelly went to Salt Lake to stay with Hal and My-ma Barker. Myrna was some better. Kay Gates has moved to Vernal where he has employment. A group of long-haired college kids came in for a trip down the Escalante River. It fell to Bob Mitchell's lot to take them. They say the water is very high at present. Bob can tell us when he gets back. Sunday both wards met in the South to hear Jerry Moun-tccr report his L.D.S. Cumo-rah mission. All of the family were there. Marva and Peggy came from Provo and Paul and family from Orderville. Louise anl Marvin talked briefly, Gordon and Beverly Staker sang the theme song of that mission, then Jerry told us his ex- ' periences. The Girl Seoul troop 212, under the direction of Leah Griffin and Pauline Lott presented their yearly program with talks by Elaine Cottam, Amber Lawrence, Stephanie Shurtz, Michelle Williams. Marllee Griffin, El- alne I)tt, Gwcn Lyman and Traccy Mitchell. The girls displayed handicraft. The basketball season is over; it is surprising how many people had business up north during that tournament. It is the first time our boys have gone to the state and they did well. Stewart Bailey has the highest point-scoring average in the state at 33.3. He was voted All-Star Player. Two of our former residents did well; Jim Spencer took first place with his team and Vernon Dean Roundy 3rd place. March has several holidays, but the Escalante one is on or near the 17th. it's then we have our fun. It is quite traditional to come back for this and meet the good old home-folk for handshakes and a kiss. |
