Show Dixie Forest Turns To Fall Beauty As Frost Arrives The Dixie National Forest will soon have its Fall season mlrad of colors The Garfield County residents will soon witness the brilliant beauty of our autumn seaon The leaves should come into full color in about two weeks The favorite local areas for viewing the products of Moth er Nature Include the drive between Pangultch Lake and Cedar Breaks; Zlon Overlook: Upper East Fork above Tropic Reservoir; Widtsoe through Main Canyon to Escalante and North Canyon The high elevations, such as the Grif fin Top, are colorful now Many people think frost is responsible for the color change, but it is not The leaves change color when the food manufacturing process, with its green chlorophyl bod ies stop The oil in the leaf and crystals can then be seen When the leaves contain heavy sugar content, red or brown colors dominate The yellow colors dominate when little sugar is present With varying combinations of oils, crys als, and sugars ttie leaves turn many beautiful and vivid col ors The Indians had a fantastic idea that it was because the celestial hunters had slain the Great Bear his blood drip ping on the forests changed many trees to red Other trees turned .yellow by the fat that spattered out of the kettle as the hunters cooked the meat Whatever the cause, it is a treat for all of us to enjoy the beauty of our fall season in Garfield County I S FOREST SERVICE NEWS The recent cold spell caused I slight rush for fire wood permits There's nothing like sub freezing temperatures to make us realize it Is time to prepare for winter Low tern perature for the past week. Sept 14 to 21, was 27 occur ring on Wednesday, Sept 20. and a very chilly 12 was re corded Tuesday night at Griffin Top and Clayton Guard Station The high temperature was 76' recorded on Saturday, Sept 16 Precipitation meas ured for this period was 04 of an Inch Kaibab-Crofts began hauling spruce from the Clayton spruce sale on the Griffin Top this past week Logging slash disposal on the Powell Ranger district has recently necn completed on the Dave's Hollow and Blub ber Creek timber sales This was accomplished through con trolled burning practices The purpose is to reduce the po tential fire hazard on the cut over areas resulting from the logging operations, and to pre pare the areas for the plant ing of tree seedlings later this fall which will provide a new crop of timber for future gen eratlons |
