Show Escalante Chit Chat BY FAY ALVEY The long anticipated holidays are over, the young folks have gone back to school, the workers to the Salt Mines and everyone has setled down to the serious business of wearing out that cold old January. It is not too unpleasant, cold but no storm and the fanners are walling about the lack of moisture. The used Christmas trees are thrown out to finish dying, folks can take the lights down, except for those who want to be first in showing them next year. The lights were beautiful, Cal Porter took first place, his decorations told the whole Christmas story, the homes of Otto Roundy and Vernon Stowe, and the Elementary school were all so tastefully done the Judges decided to call them ties. Mohr Christen-seu and La Vera Griffin were the Judges. The town board held a meeting and the members were all sworn in for their term of office, for you who have forgotten they are: Blllle Davis Mayor, Thell Barney, Mohr Chris-tensen, LaVern Griffin and Bob Sorensen members of the board. Chase Shurts Is town clerk and took care of the swearing. The sick are all better; La-fonda Mounteer is home from the Page hospital to finish recovering from her surgery, Wilford Griffin had been up on his own power and felt he is gradually Improving. Mar-jle Spencer came home from Nevada and reported her folks getting better, her mother, Lola Zenz is still on crutches but better. Blllie and Minnie Davis got word that son-in-law Al Foster Is off work with severe steam burns on his foot and leg. Reeves and Laura Baker went North so he could have more ear surgery but when the doctor examined him he Just treated it and thinks he may be able to get by without any more cutting. Of course they visited Laurel and family and Laura's sister Olive and husband. Most everyone had family members home and many were in touch by telephone. Dale and Thelma Marsh talked to Kathleen and Warren Wool-sey In Missouri and found they had flu, but tne one bright spot In their life was the nine hundred dollar scholarship Warren had received to further his schooling. Thelma accompanied Sharon Dale and Shirley to Cedar City where Sharon bought a new car, Thelma bought the old one for Dale to drive to work. The Morlas lUls had daughter Lillian Smith and two youngsters home from school in Prove, then Joe and family, Rulon and Manila Jollv ui d family c :.- from Cedar City to visit. The Grant Spencers have a new granddaughter born to Donald and Linda in the Panguitch hospital. Ray Barney got his family setled in a trailer house on the lot belonging to Roe In the south west corner of town, then he left for Georgia in the line of duty. The Arthur Mclnellys have a new grandson born to Mary r.id Sherrill Davis, this is their fifth boy, enough for a ball team, and they have no cheerleaders. Betty Alvey went north with her mother, Elise Ott while she has surgery. Hazel and Albert Carlson of Lehl visited at the DeRay Porters. Smith, Betty and Irene Alvey went to St. George for dental appointments. Theron and Dixie Mitchell and Kate Porter went to Salt Lake City for New Years, Mildred and Lynn Gates were also in the City. Lewis and Jean Griffin of Prove, visited the Lorenzo Griffins. Ott and Hilda Roundy and their family members of Monroe visited back and forth during the holidays. Weekend visitors at the Blake Robinson home were Renee Porter and daughter Charlotte of Provo, Juana Staples and daughter Kae Lynne of Richfield and Ruth and Mate Baugh of Tropic. John Norman took his daughter Linda Overall and Sharon Carlton to Cedar City to board a plane and Join their husbands in Alaska. Iola Woolsey took son Merlo Kay to Panguitch to catch the bus for Salt Lake City where he would visit Wilford Griffin, then board a plane for Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to continue his Service duty, he has sixteen months left. He feels that he was quite fortunate while in Vietnam as he had a birds eye view of the horrors of war, he helped to man a small plane which went out to locate the enemy and they did not draw enemy fire as that would bring the big brother plane to the rescue. Gwen and Randal Lyman and daughter Evelyn are home after a visit in Calif, with Milton and Joyce Woolsey and Dick and Mary Lyman. Upon their arrival here Gwen heard from a sister from Missouri who was in Salt Lake City and wanted her to come up, they decided to meet in Richfield for a short visit, Randal accompanied her but Evelyn had her fill of traveling. Rol and Mlna Porter had grandkids Deloa and Earl Fillmore of California. The Stan Haycocks had son Douglas and family here from Monticello. Ivan and Nelda Willis had son Lowell, his wife Dorthy and son here from Magna. Lowell looks like he Is wintering fine. Mary Ellen Coleman had daughter Valeree, her husband Tobe Davies and family home from Salt Lake City. Delane Griffin was transferred to Reno on his Job so Leah and the kids moved here with daughter Ann Munson. It was Marlene who talked In meeting last Sunday instead of Ann, it was not my mistake this time but have made the same mistaken identity. Freeland and Phyllis Alvey went to Kanab and stayed overnight then home by way of Panguitch where they attended the funeral services of Mrs. Stock, many went from here for the service. Dana Lyman spent part of the holidays in Kanab with the LaDell Alvcys. Dean Gledhlll took Janls Hill back to Wyoming to Papa Hill lest he blow a fuse. Starns and Fon Mecham visited relatives in Tropic. Two hippie looking fellows here re (copUnuel Inside) ESCALANTE (continued trom front page ) gistered at Ruby'" Motel dined consideiable excitement, they turned out to be FBi men tracking down dope. Judy Kelly and youngsters went to Farmington, New Mexico. Nancy Droubay had her father, Mr. Miller here from Salt Lake City. Eldon and Am-bsr Griffin had their baby daughter christened Sunday In the South ward Fast day services; her parents, the Howard Olcotts came from Richfield and a sister from Bountiful. They named her Wcndie Gae. The North ward also had christening ceremonies for the daughter of Kim and Vicki Nelson, they named her Kris-Una. The Claron Griffins and the Clyde Spencers had Jim and Janet Spencer and family home, the Griffins also had Pauline and Dennis Lott and daughter. Roe and Clema Barney and three youngsters were here from Page. The newly weds, St. n and Jan Lis ton returned from the honeymoon; Jan went back to her Job as County Supervisor o f the school lunch program and Stan to do the chores. Jay Stokes and Linda Lou Alvey visited the Ray L. Alv-eys and had their pictures taken with the cutter race horses. There are various Ideas of what Hell is like, Lance Hatch has a very unique one, he says his Idea of Hell would be to be thrown into a bottomless pit of oatmeal. Relatives here got word that Doug Haws was hospitalized in Panguitch with something or other. The first league basket ball game of the season was played here with Piute, our boys lost but really played a good game. Charley Brinkerhoff was one of the referees. Inventories taken the last days of December, all business places make a count so they can remember the place of every item and what it's valued at, wouldn't it be nice If we could all do that? Tabulate our habits and throw the bad aside keeping only good ones, the kind we do not hide. |
