Show B.L.M. Asks Everyone's Support To "Keep Your Country Beautiful" Preservation and enhancement of our country's natural beauty Is a topic of particular Interest to President Johnson and Secretary of Interior Udell. They have made this a prime goal for all Government agencies, and particularly . 1 those who manage the country's public lands. Every citizen should consider it his duty to preserve the beauty of his country. This Is the only way that America can be kept beautiful. Laws and regulations will help, but they cannot solve the problem completely. The outdoor recreation and public use of public lands regulations state in part "Garbage, trash, debris, litter or other refuse of any kind shall not be thrown or left on or a-long roads or on the public lands, or in waters on the public lands except at locations designated for the disposal of such wastes." Utah State Law 26-6-2 states: "No house refuse, offal, garbage, dead animals, decaying vegetable matter or organic waste substances of any kind shall be thrown or allowed to remain upon or in any street, road, ditch, gutter, public place, private premise, vacant lot, water course, lake, pond, spring or well." Other unsightly structures a-long our highways are unsightly signboards and excavations for gravel and soil. The Bureau of Land Management is attempting to locate and either eliminate or - authorize garbage dumps and signboards on public lands within the Kanab District. Effort is being expended to control unauthorized erection of signboards, dumping, and procuring of materials such as building stone, flagstone, fill material, codar posts and Christmas trees. Usually materials desired for personal use in small amounts may be acquired under free use permits. Materials wanted for resale must be secured under a sales contract. Permits for signboards may be obtained at a nominal charge providing they meet specifications and they will not obstruct or otherwise depreciate the scenic view. Land can be acquired at nominal cost for dumping grounds. Applications for permits, for materials, signboards or other use of public domain lands arc available at the Bureau of Land Management's Kanab District Office. There is much the Federal Government can do, through a range of specific programs, and as a force for public education; but a beautiful America will- require the effort of Government at every level, of business, and of private groups. Above all, it will require the concern and action of individual citizens, alert to danger determined to improve the quality of their surroundings, demanding and building beauty for themselves and their children. President Johnson has stated "The tradition of our past is equal to today's threat to that beauty. Our land will be attractive tomorrow only if we organize for action and rebuild and reclaim the beauty we inherited. Our stewardship will be judged by the foresight with which we carry out these programs. Wo must preserve our cities and countryside from blight with the same purpose and vigor with which, In other areas, we moved to save the forests and the soil." The Bureau-of Land Management requests your help in eliminating and preventing the recurrence of scenes on our countryside such as this. |
