Show IT S A DEER IIUNT ALL mGIm J1e u V jlj by Wm. T. Davenport -m a3 Paragonah, Utah 1 I've never seen the deer as scarce As they have been this year! A few years back you could take a ride And see any number of deer! I have hunted them for many years, Rode the mountains thru and thru, I know what I am talking about I have just turned eighty-two. There's been so much complaining By men this year, you know, Some say that they have never seen A single buck nor doe. I put on my red outfit And went to Cottonwood I didn't sec a single thing, That country was no good. So then I went to Fremont, 'Twas just the same out there. I hunted Beaver mountains, I've hunted everywhere. I hunted hard in Horse Valley, Which used to be the home Of scores of deer throughout the year Where now but few do roam. I hunted Summit Mountain Where the hunting's usually good, I couldn't find a single thing They say nobody could. The wife at home has oft complained Of washing bloodstained clothes She'll be quite lucky if she even gets To taste a venison roast! I think it's time we had a change And closed the hunting season And let them get more plentiful; You see, we have a reason! This poaching must be stopped, you know, This hunting with a spotlight. You see a flash where'er you go, Especially on a dark night! The old decp-frcczc is getting low, Times past we've been in luck, We've had a half a beef In there, Sometimes a four-point buck. In times gone by some hunters Have killed everything they found, The poor old doc, the little fawn, And left them on the ground. Frank Daly, a shrewd game warden Who lives in Panguitch town, You always find him on the job, He surely gets around! lie's after all the poachers, Shows no partiality, (He always shows up on the Lake To count your fish, you see.) A year ago I thought I'd throw The "forty-four" away, And buy myself a new gun, But what's the use today? With game so scarce and ammunition Higher now than ever, I'll keep the "fourty-four" on hand And buy myself a flivver. In '66 I hope to see The Governor take some action So we can see in bush and tree More deer and more attraction. These deer were put on earth to use And not for men to slaughter, Some poor sports should be made to eat No meat just bread and water! |
