Show Wind, Weather, And Other Items Of Interest From The Forest Service U.S. FOREST SERVICE NEWS Our mild January temperatures took a slight plunge this past week. The mercury fell to a chilling 1 for the low on January 18th. The high temperature for the period between January 13th and 20th was 46 occurring on the 14th. Temperatures during the past four days have been in the mid to high 30's. Precipitation remains low with a trace being . recorded on both .the :15th. and 16th and .03 of an inch falling in the snow storm on January 20th. This brings the total moisture for January to .11 of an inch. A welcome addition to the Dixie National Forest this past week is Mrs. Erna Riggs who will replace Mrs. Roene Dickinson as receptionist at the front desk. Mrs. Dickinson in turn will replace Lillian Smith who has transferred to Cedar City and will work in the Supervisor's Office. We all wish Lillian well in this new assign; ment. Last Monday the felling crews of the Kaibab-Crofts Mill started to work on the Dave's Hollow Timber Sale. Forester Stewart Sussex reports snow depth on the sale area from 16" to 30". Ho also indicated that sawing timber in this much snow on the East Fork Drainage must be about the coldest job around. The Forest fire season on the Dixie National Forest was light during 1965. Powell District Ranger Bruce Hronek reports a total of five fires, all lightning caused, on the district " during the past season This compaes with the twenty year average qf8 fires per sea; eon with" "the record "numberj 17 fires, occurring In 1964.
