Show Young Writers Score With Conservation Essays I The successful conclusion of the second annual Conservation Essay Contest sponsored by Bryce Canyon National Park was announced by Supt. Louis W. Hallock. The contest was open to students of high schools adjacent to the Park in both Garfield and Kane Counties, with duplicate prizes awarded in each county. The objectives of the contest were the stimulation of student thinking in the fields of conservation, and the development of greater appreciation for Southern Utah as a dynamically changing envlroment for its inhabitants. Prizes were $25 for 1st prize in each county, $15 for 2nd prize, $10 for 3rd. and the VIRGINIA BRUIIN three top Honorable Mention entrants were awarded copies of America's Wonderlands, a book on National Parks established by the National Geographic Society. The three cash prize winners in Garfield County all wrote on the subject of "National Forests and Their Economic Benefits." These students are Virginia Bruhn, Panguitch High School (daughter of the V. Bruhns), 1st prize; Linda Ormond, Escalante High School (daughter of the Carter Orm-onds of Boulder) 2nd prize, Linda was a winner also last year; Carl Shakespear, Bryce Valley High School, 3rd prize. Honorable Mention awards went to Leon Stewart and Shuana Syrett of BVHS, who wrote on "The Benefits of Tourism in Southern Utah" and to Gloria Orton, PHS, who wrote on "Careers in Conservation."
