Show ESCALANTE CHIT CHAT By Fay Alvcy ; It is not officially winter but looks and feels like it is ; had about three inches of snow then it cleared up and the temperature went ten below, cars would not start, pipes froze and all kinds of fun, the old timers say it is the "coldest weather for this time of year that we have had for twenty years. Nell Barker made it home from the hospital but is not back to work in the store yet. Marion Woolsey is in the Veteran's Hospital being observed and treated, Loretta Spencer was taken to the hospital in Panguitch. Neta Shirts was hospitalized with a strep throat and complications, she was feeling better the last report and wanted to come home but when it snowed she knew she just as well be contented. Lola Zenz got word that her brother Fred Rhodes had Ids cast changed and is healing as fast as possible, only has one side in a cast now and can stand briefly. Mi-. na Porter's arm and hand are so much better she is washing again. The Jess Barkers have gone for the winter, their sons Aubrey and Roy came with a trailer and moved them Saturday before the storm, Mina Porter wanted them to leave their lights on so it would not seem so dark and lonesome but they didn't. Some items missed last week was the, J. Clyde Spencers and son J.' C. and his boy here from Maple-ton for a visit and Lillie entertained the Better Homes club, Ruby Griffin showed Christmas gift suggestions and a tasty lunch was served by the hostess. The Arthur Mclnellys had daughter Mary Davis and toddling son home then her husband Sherill came for the f I weekend. J Rhoda Davis got a letter! from her sister Martha Grif-1 fin, she and Albert are still in Hurricane helping Charley what they can, Charley had to take his wife to Salt Lake City to a Specialist. Thelma Marsh and son Sharon Dale went to Salt Lake City on business, there was something hinted about picking out a set of rings. Kate Porter had her son Gary Chestnut home for several days, he has been sta-' tioned in Georgia but had a furlough before going to Berlin, Gary spent seven years in the Navy and is now with the Army and says he likes it better, ho is keeping on with his studies ?i.d plans to graduate from college. On his trip" around the world he saw many interesting things and places but none looked as good to him as Garfield County, Auv tralla came tho nearest to it. Marjle and Thurman Spencer did not sleep late Sunday morning, they started for church in plenty of time but ran out of gai, Neal Liston brought her and the boys on in and Thurman spent his time getting gas in the car and bringing It on to town. Lamar Kasmssen of Salina and the local cattlemen are busy moving the critters from one range to, another; Arthur Mc lnelly makes regular trips to Richfield and Usher Spencer goes occasionally. Gail' and Reva Bailey went to Page, Arizona where they were to meet their two daughters; Elaine was flying from Hawaii and was to be joined by Sandra Porter and small daughter in. Mesa, the plane was not going by Page on account of the storm so Bob started with them and were met by Gail and Reva, they bucked snow all day, sometimes zigzagging to find the road but they made it home safely. Bob will drive home when the schools close for the holiday. m Gcraldinc Liston helped her son Gary entertain at a birthday party, he was four. Ernie Grifiin got his visiting done in Prescott, Arizona and is back home. Hal and Geneal Shurtz entertained his brother Vcrl and wife Maxine last week, they live in Salt Lake and had been to Las Vegas on a trip. Mae Vonn Taylor and lone Barney went to Panguitch for medical checkups, Clyde and Lillie Spencer also made a trip over there. The Garfield Stake Relief Society Fair was held as scheduled, everything went off in fine order with Stake Director Ruby Griffin in charge. Invocation was by President Nel-da Willis; the group sang Christmas Carols led by Thelma Cottam and accompanied by Dawn Griffin; Irene Mun-son gave a reading; Neta Pollock played her accordlan; Susan Shurtz gave an organ solo; Virginia Smith a reading; there was a clever skit from the Boulder ward, Louise Liston, Renon Peterson and Id-' onna Haws dressed as reindeer and did a song and dance number; piano solo, Ann Spencer; song, Linda Alvey and Grcna Mclnelly; reading LeNora LeFevre; song, Erma Wintch ; reading, Annabell Fletcher. The displays get bigger and better each year. The business teacher Alton Morgan and wife went to Salt Lake on business; Dee and El-da Haws made a business trip to Richfield. Bobby Griffin made a trip to the Mesa Temple. In Sacrament meeting Sunday the North ward listened to talks by Usher Spencer, Lorenzo Griffin and Earl Woolsey; In the South, Gary Wayne Graff felt deserted, Morris Shirts had to push snow and even the assigned speakers did not show up so he gave Helen Shurtz as much time as she wanted and he took up the rest, they did all right. Somo of the Dam workers we noticed were Vic and Rodney Cottam, Vernon Griffin, George Hamilton, the Bernard Schows and daughter, tho Roo Barneys, the James Mclnellys, Randal Lyman. ESCALANTE 1 Randal wishes he had stayed 1 there, his kids Milton and Joyce Woolscy, Warren Wool- j soy and Kathleen Marsh took 1 Randal's pickup on the moun- j tain in the region of Posey Lake to get a Christmas tree, 1 they stuck the pickup and tho fellows walked to town and got Tobe Porter with his four wheel drive outfit to get them out. Roger Hamilton left his j job in Salt Lake and came home to help Wes run things while George works on the Dam. Had another mystcrios let tcr from Delta, Utah signed "A friend interested In the Young People", wanting to know where all the youngsters are and what doing. That is a big order but will attempt to fill it. The students attending CSU at Cedar City are Pauline Griffin, Bonnie Jean Spencer, the Alvcy sisters Ar-vonne and Lana, Rcnon Roun-dy, Carlyle Shurtz, Terril Bailey and Warren Woolscy, Melvin Jones was going but someone said he had quit, something about letting the teachers catch up. David Ray Shurtz is in Salt Lake attending the U. of U.; Paul Michael Cordon and Gary Wayne Haws in Provo at the BYU. Wilmer Baker In Salt Lake at school Marie Leibenguth married Brent Durfey and they are living here for the present, so is Carlyn Barney and her husband Everett Williams .Mar-lyn Griffin became Mrs. Dick Brant and moved to Granby, Colorado; LaVee Alvey married Eddie Neely and is in Morrilton, Arkansas; Janet Spencer (can neither say nor spell her last name) has a baby daughter whom Grandma tends while Janet works in Whitey's Cafe; Alice Ann Christiansen Pollock and baby son live in the old store apart- ment here; Marvin Porter and wife are in Kansas where ho is still In the Service. Vincent Spencers two sons are In tho Service, Vernon In Colorado and Danny In Calif.; Russcl Porter was In Alaska In the Service the latest we heard of him and Waycn Spencer is also in the Service but don't know where. Dave Mcln-elly in Alaska, Chan Mclnelly in the Far East, Ray Barney in Alaska, Don Haws in Texas, Newell Cowles at Fort Lewis, Washington. The fellows on LDS missions are Blaine Willis, Central America; Milton Osborn Florida; Ronald Mccham, Alabama; Joo Hall, Arizona; Kay Gates, Kentucky. If there is anyone missed it certainly was not intentional, you see that is the hazard of giving names. Milton Woolscy, he married Joyce Lyman, works at Glen Canyon and they live In a trailer house; Darrel Alvey also works there and camo home for the weekend to take a Civil Service examination, he don't know whether he passed or not; Francis Imlay is in Nevada working for BLM. To what age do the young people go? Susan Heaps is in Boulder with- her brother Arthur Alvey, Cell "Woolsey came home from visiting his children up North. When people write a letter why don't they sign their name? Are they modest, shy or sneaky, or is it just a game? |
