Show ESCALANTE CHIT CHAT By Fay Alvey The weather warmed up considerably reviving some of the' hardier katydids who chirp in an unhappy tone of voice. The cattle men are busy hauling and driving cattle around and they look pretty good in general; the weaner calves have especially strong lungs, we know as we live by a weaning correll. Everyone Is seeing red, deer hunters following each other hither and yon trying to get a shot. Some folks practically walk their fool legs off and never glimpse one, while others shoot them from their cars; Calvin Shurtz and Theo Barker both got big ones right above town, Calvin got a bath In on the deal as he got so excited he fell into the irrigation ditch. Danny Spencer parked his pickup and walked for miles and gave it up, when he got back to the truck there stood a big buck waiting for him to shoot, so he obliged. Danny had to get one in a hurry as he left for the service and Is stationed at Fort Ord, Calif. Newell Cowles Is also leaving for the service in Fort Lewis, Wash., and four more have their notice to go for examination; Gordon Shurtz, Afton Lciben-guth, Weldon Porter and Kirk Spencer, Kirk was given a medical discharge once. Hal Shurtz Is having one swell time, went to a specialist in Salt Lake to have a wisdom tooth dug out, It took fifteen stitches to repair the hole, his face swelled up and tho school kids say it did not improve either his looks or disposition, and he is anticipating having tho samo operation on the other ude. William Mitchell went along to give him moial support and have some teeth fixed. Daniel Wil-cock Is home fronv the hospital but Is not very well. People are still going to Pan-gultch for checkups, last week we heard of Ray and Dawn Griffin, Sarlah Alvey, Lillian Lyman, Bonnio Smith, Susan Heaps, Mae Vonn Taylor and son Emmorn. Hulda Spencer came home for long enough to get things fixed for winter, she had son Osmyn Deuel from Hatch come to hunt with brother Bart. Barton went to Vernal on a job but it snowed them out so he got on over by Hatch. Dee Haws really sold his sheep this time, now he and Klynn wonder what they are going to do for a job. Clarice Griffin Is home with a new hair do after visiting In Wayne County and going to Logan for Leadership week. Elroy and Vera Davis had son Vernon and his family here from Richfield. The Lorin Cottams went to Provo to the doctor, also visited the Mantl Temple. Lena Rollins also went North to see the doctor and had planned to stay but got homesick and came back with the Cottams. Mary R. Mclnelly Is back home, she went for two days and was gone two months visiting in Logan, Greenriver, Salt Lake and Richfield; she got nine new great grandchildren. Arden Taylor went to Wayne County for a load of spuds. Arthur Mclnelly Is freighting cattle out and coal and groceries back. D.U.P. meeting was held last week with an extra large attendance. Mary Porter of Provo has been here visiting, her son Jay came to look for deer and took her hone In time to tend Ben's family while he and ReNae came for the Robinson-Baugh wedding reception. Blake had all of his immediate family home beside Gurena's mother Rho-da DeLang from Koosharem and relatives of every description. A large number of the town folks went to Tropic for the affair. Reeves Baker, Grant and Robert Liston went to camp and gather cattle. Reeves had a cow get stuck In the mud while he was gone and the Griffins, Alburn and Delano dug her out without a shovel, Alburn was worried about his speaking assignment and forgot the shovel. He and Delane took up the time in the South ward Sacrament meeting, and in the North Doyle Cottam 2nd Newell Cowles spoke, and Linda Norman played a piano (continued inside) ESCALANTE solo. Marlon and Jane Wool-sey have, daughter Vera, her husband Dclmar Habllluband daughter Penny here from Florida. Paul Steed Is sawing lumber again and the smoko from his mill hangs along the horizon. A reporter from tho Des-cret News was in town last week taking pictures at tho Zcnz Rock Shop and getting information for a feature art-Ucle. Gary Wayno Graff went to Ordervillo to see his wife and sons, Donna is having some reactions from tho confinement and Is staying with her parents, the Hugh Chamberlains. The John Strangs have a new car; Carolyn's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Horton of Circleville were weekend visitors hero. Vernon and Edra Peterson and daughter Lanette of Hy-rum were here visiting her mother Annie Alvey, they had been to Provo visiting their daughters who are attending the BYU and came on down, Annie also had grandson Douglas Syrett from Ruby's Inn here to spend the evening. Kenneth and Dianna Alvey of Tropic were Sunday "visitors here. Orilla Cowles went to Salt Lake City for the baptisimal services of Alvin's wife Joann; Glen and Coleen Imlay and Newell went from here, and Wells and Emma Lou Mclnelly came from Vernal, Wells confirmed Joann and blessed their baby, Tra-cey Kae; the family enjoyed their visit together. Wallace Alvey and sons of Wayne County and Johnny King of Boulder tried to push a truck hauling a cat. off Main street Saturday night, but their touring car only got disabled, Starns and Fon Mecham went to Salt Lake again to see son Ronald off for his Mission. Bill Vadrene gave Clorine a new station wagon for her birthday anniversary, lucky gal. Tho friends of Jim Jackson wonder where he could be, they have been expecting him since September. Lola Woolsey had her operation as scheduled on Tuesday and tried to do just as the doctor ordered, her mother Bessie Griffin stayed with her until she was over the worst days. Hanes brought her home and she has only to rest and get her strength back, and have that agony of seeing a million things to do and can't do them. Marie Hall had her operation Thursday and was still quite miserable the last report, the operation was successful but it takes time. That thing called time is elusive and sly, sometimes it drags, it also can fly. We squander and waste it various ways, there's situations when everyone says, "If I had the time I'd do thus and so." Where does time come from, and where does It go? |
