Show WWW WW WW w wwmmm COUNTY AGENT'S NOTES By Harold Lindsay Seems that this column is ending up being an Insect pest column. Each week I find folks having a new pest giving them trouble. In Escitlante this week we find wireworms doing damage to the gardens. They are eating the stem off under the ground which caus-. es the plant to die. If we had known we would have this trouble we could have harrowed or disked some DDT of Chlordane into' the upper 3 inches of the soil and have avoided this pesx Those that have the trouble could dust some wettable DDT powder on the ground and wash it into the soil with the irrigation water. With Chlordane a 2-4 year protection can be obtained by working it into the upper 3 inches before plantin". Fay Alvey was the first to report these pests. In case the earwigs reacn us before the year is over I suggest you use some 5 per cent chlordane dust to combat thm. Our neighbors on the North and on the South have them so we probably won't go too long without the little creatures. I would appreciate if anyone finds one in the county let me know. Let's hope we don't find them. They are the insects with the pinchers at the posterior end of its body. They will eat almost anything. Some of you folks are having trouble with your favorite rose or some other shrub turn- ing yellow due to an iron deficiency in the soil. This condition has been helped In ornamentals by the use of a new soluable iron called Seques:-reno 330 Fe. The cost would probably prevent you from using it on fruit trees. A spray made by mixing 1 pound of iron sulphate to 20 gallons of water will give temporary relief to raspberries. This should be applied late in the afternoon or on a cloudy day. This can be repeated several times at intervals of a week apart. This is an advance announcement that we are having a field day at the Experiment Farm on August 6 and would like you all to plan now to attend. Much has been accomplished since that one of two years ago. |
