| Show annual T A HUGE SUCCESS from the opening meeting held on the evening of tuesday august 2nd and to the baseball game on friday august ath which officially concluded the first annual utah agricultural college farmers summer encampment the gathering of the agriculturists was a complete success the program had been arranged so that it would have a wide appeal and the demonstrations lectures exhibits socials socia ls trips all made a decided hit with the guests the demonstrations and exhibits were all practical and useful the trips were interesting and efficiently conducted the contests were closely contested and the entertainments were of a type that appeals to the people the talks were given by men and women laho who knew what they ar arz talking about and how to tell others what they themselves know the whole college its laboratories museums buildings and equipment was free to be used by the guests as they saw fit trained faculty members contributed their experience and le learning arning that the farmer and housewife of utah should be benefited all of the twelve hundred people found something of absorbing interest A variety characterized the whole encampment camp ment in the closing meeting governor mabey made a stirring appeal for economy in public expenditures and for true loyalty to government the governor called attention to the recent reorganization of the utah state government as an honest attempt to introduce correct business principles in public expenditures we have tried I 1 in two major ways to reduce the expenses of running the state government s declared governor mabey first we have reorganized some of I 1 the he state departments and have merged several offices with the result that a substantial saving has been made then we have cintr introduced a department of finance and purchase which will aid all departments in reducing their expenditures and in preventing deficits after going over the situation after the new system has been in operation for seven months only we are able to announce a reduction of 8 13 per cent in the stati state tax levy for the next year this means a saving of to the tax payers add to this the deficit which the state will cancel during the first biennium and we have a total saving for the two years of secretary of state H E crockett crocked spoke briefly emphasizing the value to the development of utah of the more than miles of hard surface roads now built in the state attorney general cluff also addressed the assembly he called attention to the significance of such a gathering of hundreds of experienced farmers and home makers attending a week of recreation and instruction on the campus of the their irown own school the U A C in bringing the encampment officially to a closes close president elmer G peterson of the college thanked the visitors for their attendance and said that the college bad been happy to entertain them president trident peterson also stated that plans were verc being laid for a bigger and bett setter er encampment next year 1 before closing president peterson announced the winners of the various judging contests conducted during the encampment the silver cup presented by the national copper bank of 0 salt lake city tor for the county having the highest total scora score in all judging contests was won by utah county the teams representing utah county were mr christensen V T jones bowen and holden taylor in I 1 livestock judging jos V W H nielson and ad R 1 knudson in grain judging and mrs clark and erma hamilton in hats and dresses mr C G adney of box elder county won the highest individual score in the livestock contest mr P F L clegg of wasatch county was high in the judging of grains mr V W S hansen of box elder with a score of per cent was high in t the e judging of hard wheals and mrs R E barrett of weber county was high in the making of hats and dresses V the college is already laying plans for the next annual encampment to be held during the summer of 1922 the one just past proved to be a real va cation for the farmer he rested while 11 he e learned it is is seldom that business and pleasure have been combined with such surprising success |
