Show PETERS introduces WORTHY MEASURE A bill which would increase the number lumber of 0 senators irom from eighteen to nineteen and which would decrease salt lake countes coun tys proportionate representation resen tation in the utah state senate making it five out of 0 nineteen members instead ot of as at present five out of 0 eighteen was introduced as senate bill no 2 in the senate by J W peters republican from the first district comprising box elder and tooele thoele counties the bill would increase tile the membership in the house to fifty tive five ot of which salt lake county would ile be allotted sixteen members under the proposed apportionment salt lake county with 2517 per cent of 0 the population ot of the state and with avith per cent of the vve wealth alth would have 2909 per cent of the voting strength of the house and only 2631 per cent in the senate at present salt lake county has per rent ant ot of the voting strength in III the senate and 2128 per cent in the house senator peters proposes to make the basis of 0 representation in III the state senate one senator tor for each inhabitants or major traction fraction ther thereof eor however lie proposes to divide the first senatorial district which he represents and which now has only population so that dox box elder county will have a senator all to itself aith inhabitants while tooele thoele county would be linked up with davis in what would be known as the thirteenth district with inhabitants with his proposed membership of litty fifty five in the house however the lowest constitutional number ot of senators would be nineteen since the s states basic law provides that the number of senators shall not be less than one third the number of 0 house members it if he were to take away the second member from weber and from utah counties therefore and also to combine his proposed third and fifth districts senator peters would have to add members somewhere else in order to meet the constitutional requirements A indicated the bill would chan change the boundaries of the first senatorial district by taking tooele thoele county away from box elder and leaving the latter a i rapidly grov eroding ving county as one senatorial district tooele thoele under the arrangement ran gement of the bill would be added to davis to form forin a new senatorial district brict numbered tile hie summit and daggett counties now in the fifth with a total population 0 of thus giving to its his proposed third district a total population of 0 to replace summit and dagget in bi the fifth he had added to that district uintah countes coun tys and lie he finds the present twelfth district to which uintah belongs large enough without these are the only changes proposed by senator peters in his
