Show HOOD RIVER APPLES SHOWN IN BRIGHAM yesterday a large dodge graham truck on which was mounted a specially built body arranged to display sa samples m P 1 e s of the h e H hood 0 od R river i v er 0 oregon reg 0 n apples p pa e s stopped d t in n brigham B rig h a m cl city ty T the h e truck was being driven from hood river to texas tor for the exclusive purpose of advertising the apples from that famous apple growing section and was sent out by the hood river apple appl s growers association the body of the truck was so arranged ran 9 ed that doors on either side dropped down and opened to view declining racks cracks of apples showing three grades ot of packing in the various varieties the apples were graded as to defects size and color the third trade grade was even so BO perfect that only minor detects about the size of a pinhead could be detected and were pronounced by local as superior to any pack they had ever seen the second grade looked perfect in every respect and the first grade apples were perfection themselves they were wrapped in paper like oranges are wrapped and a part of the paper torn open to expose the fruit on the doors ot of the truck were painted pictures of beautiful apples in a most attractive manner the inspection and grading of ap ples pies in the hood river valley la IS most rigid according to the gentleman displaying the apples from that section in one particular case a grower bringing in a load of first grade apples tor for inspection was turned back six miles to because in one box of apples was found one or two slightly blemished but when they go on the markets under a specified grade the public can depend that the apples from hood river are fully up to that grade while in some years ago afro I 1 the writer had the privilege of visiting some of the large prune orchards this was in the harvesting season season anil and the ground under each tree was covered I 1 with groat great piles ol of prunes in asking the reason tor for this we were in in formed that they were the culls the grower stated that he got more more tot for his prunes by selling the best and discarding every prune with the slightest blemish than lie he could get tor for them all mixed together then he had the culls bodry to dry and to feed to his hogs |
