TRAFFIC TIED UP the heavy rainstorm coming coining over this section from the southwest early last evening later resulted in death the disastrous devastation ot of tana farm lands homes and other property caused by a heavy cloudburst in the hills northeast ol of willard at about 0 clock last evening floods ot of water came tearing down the mountains through the canyons and ravines carrying in its path large boulders trees gravel and mud sweeping everything in its way the beautiful farm lands between south perry and the southern limits ot of willard city were laid waste the greatest greate st torce force ot of water perhaps came down the willard Wll lard canyon tearing out the power house carrying away the machinery throwing tho the city in darkness and rushing madly on to the lowlands below the city the home oters mary diary ellen ward a large brick structure located halt half a I 1 block south baud aad two blocks east of 0 the willard garage was washed away in the he house bouse at the time were mrs ward her daughter ln in law mrs earl ward and her I 1 grand i i daughter sylvia ward daughter rot mr and mrs william ward or Df elba idaho they were carried off with the flood and early this morning the body of mrs mary alary ellett ellen ward was found man mangled aled and cold in death about two blocks away at the home of dan harding mrs ward Is said to have been about sixty years ol of age the body of 0 mrs earl ward lard Is missing probably buried in the debris from the flood sylvia ward was lound found about fifty feet from the body of Mr mrs ward sWard in a hay stack in a critical crl condition she was rushed to the dee hospital at ogden she Is a grand daughter of mr and mrs R A beecher of this city with whom she went to willard only yesterday the homes bomes of leonard wells and george ipsen located in the vicinity of the ward residence were also washed away according to reports but none of the occupants were injured barns stacks outbuildings buildings out and fences were also carried off in the hood flood including the large barn belonging to S N cook which was carried across the state highway and lodged at th the ewest west side ot of the road two automobiles are lodged in about seven feet ot of mud c on m the state highway north ot of willard Wll lard it la Is stated and thee the occupants are missing As aaron christensen and his mother were coming from ogden last evening and just as they reached the cook I 1 place the flood of water rushed in front of them two cars were ahead one a 7 passenger of tourists the driver rushed back and asked mr christensen Chrls where they could go he started south again and told the man to follow however he saw no more of either of the cars ar or the parties in them this may account tor for the two cars standing in the mud on the highway but no account of the occupants can be made mr christensen Chrls drove back to ogden and came to brigham this morning over the oregon short line railroad the water seemed to come mainly from three sources sources A heavy stream came down the arry perry canyon another down the gulch east of the grazier farm north ot of willard and still another the largest body of water wate r do down th the willard wallard canyon the water f from m th the perry canyon flooded the country south from bishop H E perrys home on to the orchard of alt alf N olsen the beautiful farm of 0 T C youngs was practically ruined being covered with boulders boul dere and gravel from the olsen orchard south to the bend tit in the road near the grazier farm little damage was done at this point devastation occurred again tor for a distance to the south great walls ot of water came down the willard hlll ard creek bed sweep sweeping in everything t before it the old creek bed was wag tilled filled with mud and aed gravel and at this point the state highway Is covered w with ith about seven feet of 0 earth aul boulders and mud the city onwillard ot willard was almost wiped off the map and the I 1 damage done is so great that an estimate can hardly be made at this time hundreds of people traveling both ways in their automobiles were tied up for or the night being compelled to take refuge wherever they could find a place to stay the hotels and rooming houses in this city were crowded to capacity and many of 0 the homes of the citizens were thrown open to the traveling public the tracks ot of the utah idalio idaho central railroad company were buried with debris shutting off traffic entirely the road may be opened late this afternoon traffic over the oregon short line was only delayed about two hours last night during jahe the time the water was passing aver over atte the tracks trains over this line are running regularly today A large force of men and teams Is working on the highway clearing 0 off the debris boulders and muil mud and it it will be some time probably a day or two before the road Is thrown open to the public hundreds of men responded to the call for help and each hour the force la Is being augmented by additional d dit men and teams troop F cavalry uta utah N national guard of this city left tor for the scene about eleven today to aid in clearing off the road they were mobilized early this morning and put in readiness to go awaiting only the permission of governor charles R mabey which was granted by his honor as soon as the request reached him the terrible property loss will not be known for some time at least Huno hundreds reds of tine fine farms have been coy covered with rock and gravel crops washed ariy away animals and poultry destroyed and orchards ruined the loss will run into hundreds of thousands of dollars i quite a number of brigham people were at willard last evening when the flood came and were compelled to spend the night there anxious par ants sat up all night worrying forthe tor the safety of their 6 hildren children as a number I 1 of young people had gone to Willit willard williard rd to attend a party last evening they all returned today land and were given a hearty welcome home |
