Greely, of field district No. 1, with headquarters In Missoula, returned Wednesday from his trip through the northern part of Montana and Idaho with Secretary of Agriculture James A. Wilson, and brought with him much new Information of tho forest flro conditions In the' territory throu-which throu-which he has traveled. In an interview, inter-view, Forester Greely said that within with-in tho Coeur d'Aleno forest, comprising compris-ing territory lu northwestern Montana Mon-tana and Idaho, there were forty separate sep-arate largo llres .now burning, and that nn army of more than 1,000 men wero employed In fighting the flnmes. Not a single one of theso forty fires has been reported as under control, con-trol, and the force of men will bo Increased In-creased ns fast aS' possible until some kind of control enn bo maintained and a good soaking rain comes to tho aid of the fighters. While tho flghtors aro doing much good nnd have saved countless acres of flno timber from being burned already, al-ready, still they aro unablo to cope with tho changing winds and Increasing Increas-ing number of fifes. Tho wholo work has been carried on with ns much system as has been possible, nnd among the numerous crews employed there has been work accomplished that may well bo labeled la-beled heroic. |
