In ancient times the world wns not nearly so rich ns ' IB to-day, hut economic conditions were much fnirer. Now the world is richer, but the contrasts between luxury nnd poverty arc very glaring. Many immigrants, ignorant of the language, without funds, far from home nnd relatives, rela-tives, unable to secure employment, get discouraged. What has particularly particular-ly struck mo is the fact ,that so many persons in the so-called lower classes of society nro taking their own lives. I know of no period in ancient history his-tory where suicide among the lower classes was so prevalent. In ancient times tho patricians did commit suicide, more, however, because of political po-litical reasons than for anything else. |
