I venturo to send a rough sketch o a hog sorting pen I planned sovernl years slnco, and which I have found to work satisfactorily, writes a corro spondent of WnllncoB' Farmer. I uso II mostly for sorting hogs for market, and when I wish to sort out a certain kind or bIzo of hogs I go among thorn with n enn of paint and n paddlo while- thoj nro busy eating nnd daub a little paint on tho backs of thoso I wnnt to sort out. Then tho wholo herd Is lot Into tho lnrgo lot (A), sco. Fig. 1. From ono corner of this lot nn opening Is A rpTavi i c Figure 1. mndo nbout 1C or 18 inches wldo nnd 30 Inches high, nnd 3 foot from center of opening Is set n, post (d), which Is tho end post In division fenco between two smaller lots (C nnd D). Hang n light but strong gnto from post so that It will swing easily from sldo to sldo of opening to let tho hogs in cither yards C or D as wanted. Tho fenco between lots A nnd C should bo a tight ronco of Butnclcnt height to Bcreen tho mnn oporatlng tlio swinging gnto (from shoulders down) from Bight of tho hogs In lot A. A small platform, shown at 13, is built at ono sldo and abovo oponlng, upon which tho operator opera-tor stands. Two men drlvo tho hogs I e .... y 1 Figure 2. Blowly through tho opening, which la alternately opened to nllow tho mnrked hogs to go Into ono ynrd nnd tho unmarked Into tho other. Somo onts or shelled corn mny bo thrown Into ynrds II nnd C to keep tho hogs awny from tho swinging gato until tho Job Is done. Tho gnto Is swung from sldo to sldo ns desired by means of n strong handle fnstcned so-curoly so-curoly to tho gnto nbout 8 Inches from tho looso ond and extending nbout 3 feet above tho gato. Another correspondent gives his plan of sortlns pens, Fig. 2. Theso aro genornl plans nnd mny easily bo nltored to suit individual cases. As thoy stand they aro for hogs or sheep, and I havo found them very ofllclent. I do not think they would bo prnctlcnl for cnttle, ns ono man could not opor nto both gates nt "f" If built on a largo Bcalo. "a" and "b" Is a fenco across corner of feed lot. Gato at "a" mny be opened when not In, use, nnd tho fence will not Interfere with stock. Two gntos nt "f." Gnto "o" Is not cBsontlnl, hut greatly simplifies sorting, nnd mnkes n smnll pen of the alley, which is very convenient for ringing oi castrating. Opening at "b" and "c" to bo closed with hurdlo nftor hogs aro In corner "g." |
