Show a million and a half I FOR , PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS. 1 National Irrigation Congress Fol' lowed By Great Forward Move mcnt at Sacramento, California's Capital City and County Takes a Position Among the Most Progressive Communities by Voting for Complete Now Heads, Bridges & Public Hulld-lugs, Hulld-lugs, Tho National Irrigation Congrcfs, which met lu Snernmento last week, gave a great Impetus to locnl Improvement Improve-ment and development, as well as to the movement for Irrigation, forestry nnd conservation of the whole resources of the country. Almost Immediately after the close of the Coniress a Cltv and County bond election wns held and bonds to the amount of 1,(500 ,000 were voted for roads, bridges and public buildings. The majority for tho bonds wns one of the largest In tho history of nlmilar elections, which goes to show that the Capital City of California has had a real awakening. The National Irrigation Congress was the first National Convention to meet In Sacramento and the people rose as one man to meet tho occasion, enthused not alone by the prospect of entertaining ninny distinguished men, but more by the opportunity to further the splendid objects of tho Congress. The fund raised within tho city for this purpose amounted to M5.000, or one dollar for every man, woman and child In tho city, probably the largest per capita subscription subscrip-tion ever made by any city for any biinl lar eveht. This was supplemented by 10,030 contributed by counties nnd In, dlvlduals elsewhere In the State. The voting of tho bonds, 1, 500,000-incans 500,000-incans that every main road In Sacramento Sacra-mento County will be mcnadamlzcd from county line to county line. It means that every bridge and culvort on these roads will hoof cement,' steel or stone. It means the erection of a new Court-hnuo Court-hnuo and Jail, which, with tho magnificent magni-ficent State Capitol and tlio new City Hall, now being built at a cost of fSOO, 000, comprise one of tlio finest. sets of public buildings to be found In any city of the west. |
