Show missionaries GO THROUGH FORD FACTORY in writing jo to his parents mr ant am mrs mra carl nelson ot at this city unde date of 0 august elder erwin nelson who is laboring as a missionary in canada gives the following inter esting account ot of a visit to the ford factories at detroit michigan probably this letter will carry a lit tie tic more interest than the re rest rea A be cause I 1 have seen some interest interesting inZ things in fit the past bec week we hay hav some people at kingsville Kings ville that w had to visit and on our way there wel w pass thru windsor windsor is jus across the border on the Can adlai side and straight north across a river about a mile anide ide is detroit gan being we were so a lose close to goot goo I 1 at old U S we thought we would like to set our toot foot on gods country again so we took the terry ferry boat and crossed over detroit I 1 is a big city having mor mar than a milion people and in it is 10 lo bated the factories where packards Pac kanis Cadilli ica essex Lincol ns fordson tractors and the fords are made we re took a notion that we wanted to see how biow they made those jitneys so we look to ok a car and after riding for three i fourths of an ail hour at about 35 per i nd still in the business district we ar rIed at the said henry fords factory tac tory we entered the office lobby and received a card which we signed and I 1 they took us through the plant to give you a slight idea of the size lot it ill cool down to figures the i main plant has under root acres anti and tie die building goes up several stori 1 ies for ile he also has ISO acres more used j tor for runways etc around the factory in the first section of the building i there are machines costing 7 they use gallons of lu bi bri lea cating ting oil daily and gallons of fluids the leather belt on atheni combined would go 50 miles the factory Is so arranged that ey ev ery piece is finished lit in the department it began for instance a crank shaft is forged and and passed on oil to the man next lie he does some more on lt it and so after passing thru about six or seven operations it is ready to be assent assembled bled into the car ford employs about men an am the poorest paid laborer eyen even down to a floor door sweeper gets a day A present he pays out at the rate a 0 more than halt half million dollars pe 8 hour shift la in wages alone A man mail is never fired only lit in th rarest cases if he is unable to d the job he is at lie he I 1 is taken to the employees clearing house and put on oil I 1 another job they study their men and put them at the job they are best fitted tor for so BO instead of firing a man they give him another chance at something lie be Is better fitted to it Is remarkable to see how quickly the cars are assembled I 1 may show how the motors are set up the enless chain conveyor system carrier I 1 each part along and men take them off as they need them first the case the then it the crankshaft cylinders pistons platon piston 1 rods gears brakes and finally you look at th the e end ot at the chain and i see ee motors coming off all ready to put linto into cars I 1 on the south side of the factory is 18 labove a conveyor running about IS 18 inches above the ground first they slap on ione one part then the rear axel then the front connect them up on goes the wheels and down just a little further the they are running off fords at about two a minute ford has a rather peculiar system 0 of supplying materials he have any materials stored stared he takes them right oft off the cars into the factory and in fit a little while they are fords ads five or six gix locomotives are ara I 1 busy all the ibe time just shifting shit ting cars car for them doing no other work ford has his own lire department lie ile makes the bodies 0 of the cars on a conveyor similar to tile the assembling one and it runs parallel to it until the body is finished then it ts Is hoisted up run fun over and set on the ebanis s and listened ta d there ali the car is ia practically finished by that time and only lacks a little wiring and as I 1 said before thep hey start them up and ad run them off t two wo every minute I 1 he makes his own cloth for the tops continued on page 2 column 4 1 missionaries VISIT THE FORD FACTORY continued from first page and it Is ia sewn together by a machine that makes staches a minute in the crank case department thea the crank case Is made in six operational by seven presses exerting a downward lout pressure of SOO tons 22 men turn out 1000 crank cases dally daily 1 the power plant Is a novelty ile he designed a combined gas steam engine which ile he uses this plant alone supplies enough witter water gas electricity and heat to supply a modern city of people nine of 0 these en fineg develop horse power other engines are used which bring the total horse power up to or better six water pumping gals of water each day aup up ply the plant while 2 pumps of 25 million capacity the water his refrigeration plant supplies tons toils 0 of ice fee per lay day and it goes mostly to cooling th the quenching oil gallons of 0 oil per day Is circulated and cooled so he keeps using the same of oil over and over again no coal Is touched by hand it is dumped and taken up tip in elevators after it is crushed to the ninth floor and dumped into hunkers bunkers then 0 of course it is distributed by automatic stokers smokers sto kers ford started out in 1903 owning 2114 25 per cent ot of the stock mock in lie he purchased enough to make it 53 58 per cent la in 1919 his son esdel purchased the remaining 41 per cent the output of 0 fords in 1903 was 1748 cars and in 1921 is was about in addition to the factory lie he runs schools of all kinds for his employees and I 1 gives them a bonus along with al a share of the profits I 1 have figures both on bonus and profits so it if houi you want them I 1 can send them tham to you I 1 I 1 saw babe ruth play ball too ill say more it if you ask for more but will call this enough now ask I 1 any questions about ford I 1 think I 1 can answer them J As ever ERWIN |
