Show NOXIOUS WEEDS the state board ot of agriculture Aerl culture in regular session march 20 1922 hereby declares and proclaims white top draba to be hereafter a noxious weed in the state of 0 utah this in addition to canada thistle bull thistle arid and burdock make up the list ol of noxious weeds in the entire state but several counties have added by petition certain other weeds to the list in those counties white top belongs to the mustard family being closely related to pepper grass and consequently Is hot peppery and distasteful to animals it is a perennial which means that it propagates by running rootstocks root stocks as well as by numerous seeds and lives over from year to year this Is the earliest of all our perennials it begins about the same time as alfalfa and ripens seed before the first crop of hay bay la Is cut CUL canada thistle Is also a perennial it has long slender stems and pinkish purple flowers usually in clusters the leaves are small and extremely spiny it spreads by seeds and running root stocks it has quite a start in some sections and Is so aggressive that it if not soon controlled will spread and do considerable damage this Is a later and slower grower maturing its seel seed in august burdock and bull thistle are bien nials that infest wet places neglected pastures and lands landi preventing these plants from producing seeds tor for two years will eradicate them arid and one cutting below the crown about blooming time lime so as to prevent seeds from developing will suffice tor for either of these weeds section 1 of the noxious weed law reads as follows section 1 destruction OF NOXIOUS WEEDS every railroad canal ditch arid and water company and every person firm and corporation owning controlling or occupying lands in this state and every county municipality irrigation or drainage district having the supervision and control over streets alleys lanes rights ot of ways or other lands shall cut and destroy all canada thistle bull thistle burdock and all other weeds designated by the state board of 0 agriculture as noxious weeds and injurious to vegetation before beford such weeds shall propagate or spread and whenever required q aired by the state board or the county crop pest inspector the law alone however i it ie ot of little avail it if public sentiment la Is not behind it and a majority ol of the community Is voluntarily living the law by practicing good farming methods method s and by cooperative effort in public meetings demonstrations etc are enlightening the masses and creating public sentiment let us look for cleaner arid and better farming eradicate the bad weeds now in our midst and prevent others from gaining a foothold now Is the time to begin work on weed eradication especially of those perennials that grow and reproduce from running rootstocks root stocks the one sure way to get rid of these to keep the tops cut down so thornly thor fily that they cannot develop any arc grcen n leaves the leaves manufacture out of the raw food the food that keeps the roots and all other parts 0 of t t the h e plant alive therefore it no gre green e i i I 1 leaves e a v are allowed to develop the stored up food in the roots is finally exhausted and the plant perishes and constancy are necessary because it if loaves leaves are allowed to develop they soon become green and make food to continue the life of those pernicious roots CARL ISAACSON it crop pest inspector |
