Show experiences OF A missionary brooklyn N Y feb 10 1922 editor news my aly conscience fairly smokes in guilt because I 1 have not thanked you before kindness and generosity in sending to me the box elder news how my eyes feast upon it whenever it ar arrives rives every tiny bit oc at it is read and reread im so proud ot of my native land in the west where the civic atmosphere Is teeming with activity yes I 1 still slug sing with heart and soul proud yes ot of my illy home in the mountains the time passes so rapidly here tile the weeks simply bump into each other and I 1 have so much to learn and accomplish com as I 1 realize I 1 am enjoying a rare opportunity I 1 am unable to express in mere words how thankful I 1 am that I 1 was allowed the brivil tige of 0 coming here to do missionary work there is no degree of 0 satisfaction in the world that can call compare to that felt by one who alio puts forth an honest effort to serve his heavenly father to whom we are indebted tor for all that we have I 1 have been laboring in springfield mass tor for nine little months it is a mo most st desirable locality situated nearly midway between two great cities boston and new york we hane hae a splendid branch here and are introducing and explaining the gospel in many homes the cities ot of the east I 1 have noticed sustain a very large foreign population especially new york foreigners do not seem strange there they belong there to me new york was quite a curiosity or rather I 1 was the curiosity to new york the elevated trains and noisy subways simply overwhelmed my unaccustomed ears which previously had innocently believed the loudest noise in fit the world was the clamor and yelling at a weber and box hider elder basketball game but I 1 have found that the noise of new york is beyond description the truest words in describing it would be to say that while elevated trains shoot above my head bead chasms yawn and bombs ex blode beneath my feet and I 1 am aware that a subway station is near and people oh such herds ot of humanity there are never enough hotels to accommodate the arrivals and new yorks atmosphere is nearly wholly one of extravagance and pleasure for example everyone dines at restaurants in fit new york and as night tails falig more inore people are seen in evening dress than in any other city in the country A dress suit there a garb reserved tor for occasions and j places laces ot of supreme eloquence but persons in such attire can very often be seen in one ot of childs restaurants eating without fear a fifteen cent salad the institutions of learning are wonderful one can get a well balanced education free simply by taking advantage of the wonderfully complete museums and libraries the habit of extravagance is evl CA dentan the whole community the shop girl may have but one dress but it is the very latest style no one is ever more than two weeks behind the fashions in new york the world it seems Is losing its sanity in the quest tor for wealth and pleasure and such poor worth worthless leps requirements they are compared to the eternal blessings our father in heaven will give it only hia 1119 children will stop their quest for or pleasure falsely call cl cd happiness and follow his teachings and an it receive the only worthwhile joy jay in n the world boston is quite different from new york it is tar far more conservative reason rather than emotion guides new england and especially expenditure for example a person once stated that there probably quite as much gold upon the dome ot of the state capitol at boston as woul I be necessary to decorate a new york restaurant no bostonian Bost onlan thinks ot at spending ills his income no new yorker things ot at spending merely his ats income the tha boston stores the air of 0 inviting wayward extravagance young men in evening dress do not idly stroll forth into the boston streets with eiith overcoat carelessly unbuttoned no they hurry into motors and taxis and are arc about their business seriously almost apologizing tor for so doing the boston accent in speaking Is of 0 course famous and the culture Is gen gell ninety a part of its existence the continued on page three column SIZ six experience OF A missionary continued from page paga one story is told that boston used to be so prim and precise that at a humble table it uncommon to hear bear a member of 0 the family seriously say please pass the butter that Is within your sphere ot of influence harvard college la Is one of 0 the places ot of interest as well as many old relic spots of the revolutionary war one never quite forgets while alle in boston the great moments in the history of our nation and the streets how confusing con they are it only takes a few weeks to find your way in new york but it would take a life time to overcome losing yourself your in boston I 1 fear ear my letter has proven to be too long but I 1 teel feel just like a sponge all 11 filled up as I 1 have enjoyed so BO many new experiences but the greatest source ot of my joy comes from the knowledge I 1 have gained ot of our gospel little did I 1 realize the position we as latier latter day saints hold bold in the world before I 1 came here it makes one feel eel sad when I 1 hear how bow careless and heedless the young folks of the church are it if they could only realize the great opportunity ot of having been born into the only y true church it they would read the book ot of mor monand doctrine ot of covenants the power ot of evil and indifference could not tempt them I 1 realize I 1 am step my own toes when I 1 say this because before I 1 came on my mission i I 1 wad neglectful too but I 1 have tried to tully fully repent and sincerely determine to aei ever live my life as nearly right as possible regardless ot of the supposed to be temptations of the world such as extremes in dress and other abominable social customs may our father tor for you and all tho the dear people at lionie home Is if my sincere desire OCTAVO |
