have found it acry very difficult to obtain reliable inform atlon regarding tho the pioneers who first settled n kanab and kane county prior to te 1870 the time when levi stews art and his company were first sent here by president brigham young therefore upon request from her many kanab friends and from the edl tor ter of the standard mrs mallner parker parken roundy of salt lake city once a participant of 0 early pioneer days in this county has kindly contributed tor for publication the following history of the early settlement of this county in the spring of 0 1865 lorenzo W roundy jerad C roundy myrun 8 roundy boundy and william ford settled in III upper chanab kanab in that part ot of the county now called alton walter smith william williaa ii smith charles partridge and their families to together with n few other families also settled here about tills this time these pioneers built log cabins just west of the place where the kane county dairy was at ei wards edwards erected that tall fall the roundy brothers returned to center ville davis county to get the rest of their families soon after they were gone the remaining families at upper kanab were called to strengthen lower kanab these settlers left everything and did as they wore bid lorenzo roundy and his families came on to kanab a little later that fall john D parker who was also one of those pioneers was delayed on account of sickness but started south from lovan levan juab county the last of november on account pt of the hostility of the indians along the kovler river rive r ne he went by way of fillmore deaver beaver county toquerville rockville and pipe springs ile ho arrived at kanab the third day of january 1866 through three feet of s snow now the snow has never fallen so deep deap in kanab since that winter the same evening brother parker arrived his little tour four year old son died of scarlet fever three days after the parkers had bad at pipe springs robert whitman and james mcintyre were murdered by navajo indians the sad news of this th terrible murder was written on an envelope by a herd boy who had escaped and was brought to kanab by a pluto plute indian the people looked to L W roundy as a leader although he was waa not a bishop at that time however he called tor for volunteers to carry the message to president snow at st george byron D roundy and oran dark clark answered to this call and were soon equi Ded they started from at 9 p M and reached st george the next rooming morning at 10 byron roundy afterward often said that it was the fear of that dark nights ride expecting every moment to be surrounded by Lama Lamant tes that chused caused him to be bald headed the bodies of the two murdered mer mor dered men were taken to st george where they were cardd cared for by loving fi lends friends that winter the people or of kanab fought savages on one side and death by scarlet fever on the other john D parker burled two children that winter to and L D roundy burled one the smith family also lost one continued from page one the tour four little graves lay due dixe west from the north cast corner of the old fort on the hill between two cedar tre trees in III january a company ot of men were sent to kanab from the settlement in dixie to help guard the fort as the indians were very hostile at this time the tort fort was guarded night and day however every dark ot of the moon the indians got their booty the settlers were never molested at full moon however in every raid they made they succeeded tu III stealing cattle horses and sheep the men were unable to catch them although once the savages were forced to leave their meat broiling on the coals in order to escape colonel andrews told the men not to tire fire the first shot and so to tb the regret of some no indians were killed in february of that year a little ton lon was born to the wife of charles hn ney in a dugout dug out it proved to be as nice as any baby the first of march thi the settlers of kanab were asked to leave attl and go to long valley to strengthen that place it took them five days to travel the distance of fifteen miles the teams were poor and the loads heavy one oxen dropped dead on the mt alt carmel bill when mr parker one of the company took oft off the yoko the night they the camped at three lakes a baby girl wa was s born to the he wafe ot of oran dark clark who was waa one of 0 the express riders crops wore planted as soon as they arrived at mt carmet that spring the berry boys and one of 0 their wives were killed near short creek joseph berry when found was leaning between the wheels and the wagon bed dead robert and the woman were lying dead on the ground an indian brought the news to grand ni ma berry written on an envelope by william berry a brother of the victims and who had gone to meet meat them the he dead were taken to st george gdorge and burled by sorrowing friends this same month mont hD B D roundy and orley bliss were called to go on a mission to the missouri river to escort a poor company of immigrants to zion with ox teams the last week in june amoo months after arriving in mt alt carmel tho the final call came for the people living in mt carmel and long valley talley to move to dixie tho the crops they had bad planted looked beautiful but they made ready and were soon on wheels gain again the first day out a little tour four year old boy of cf brother spencers of upper long valley tell fell from a horse and was run over by a wagon and killed instantly st th the company stopped tor for a day to bury him beneath a large tree president snow sent a company of men from the dixie country to guard the people on tho the way at short creek they stopped to water their teams cams when colonel andrews saw two indian chiefs charlie charli a owed a and nd coal crock creek john riding down the canyon colonel andrews and L W roundy met them at a little distance from the company they shook hands and talked until the wagons were corralled and the women pla placed ced in them all of 6 a sudden a shot was heard ono one of the boys had laid his bis gun in the wagon and it had exploded this caused a great deal of excitement among the company as the nerves of everyone was strained to the limit in III the tumult it caused william berry got his gun and threatened to kill the t two we chiefs because ho he thought they had kill killed ad his brothers it took tour four nien men his two tivo wives and his mother t to 0 calm him and to take his gun away from him the tumult subsided the indians promised to go back up tho the canyon and let the company pass in peace the men decided not to sto stop to eat but everyone took a sandwich and were soon on onlie the way again As darkness began to hover around them the captain andrews discovered three flickering lights on top of the moun mountain mountair tair in a trIan triangular guar shape an drews was ad an indian scout and knew the meaning of the fire signals ot of the indians ile ho informed the company of the signals and advised them not to stop atop that night for fear that they might be massacred so on they went all the women who were able were asked to drive a team that night so that the men and boys might guard th the stock estock and teams several mothers browl teams that night with babes in their arms by morning the company had reached rockville unharmed they crossed the virgin river near st george where they camped three days to rest word was sent to L W roundy to take his part of the company and go to Ka narra iron county and help build up that village the rest of the company were allowed to go to their former homes in the dixie settlements elsewhere th roundy company got to tho the second of july just in time to celebrate the fourth of july that tall fall president snow took L W roundy to salt lake city and ordained him bishop of Ka narra which position he held until may 27 1876 when be was drowned in the colorado river in 1872 the author of this sketch was married to william heber roundy and with her husband and hla his brother byron returned to upper kanab where permanent homes were established I 1 still sill feel th
