Show THE NEED OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION the following article has been contributed tri buted by mr burns L finlinson Fl the seminary teacher at kanab in answer to a request for tho the purpose und and aim of seminary ork it isi 14 indeed interesting Interest Ang 10 0 turn back the pages ot of history and review t the e various points of 0 view that people 0 ot the past have had ot of educator edu caton it Is interesting to note that the charlemagne started to learn his letters late n life too ott oft tor for tho the welfare of the people have the kings felt that to study was to belittle themselves not many centuries have passed since the christian monks were the only class ot of people that could read and write many are still living who have seen the conviction grow on the madof man ot the p people eo pie that every child Is entitled to an education today education its as a part 0 of our great democratic plan and ideal we e feel that it is s just as important as an our r to vote tote our great problem is otto notto develop othe ideal but bui to main ta I 1 n it in the best possible and pacal manner in giving geving tests to men who were ivere patted during the last great war some rather out sanding facts were brought to light some that tailed failed to speak well for our educational cat ional 9 system grant that we have and are still improving where wo we have found that wo we are weak we are still as people interested in the best of education we are not quite satisfied with what constitutes a real education some hold the goal as a possession of facts all of us have known individuals who are the products of this school ot of thought and as they go through life they thoy fail tall to apply themselves thus the system of education that succeeds bost best will bo be the one that awakens the boy and girl their inner being the value of creating ideas of their own john ruskin has well said that all education should be moral first intellectual secondarily As I 1 interpret this it means needs to have a moral morn religious base it such la is bad I 1 think there need be no tear fear ot of education or original ideas with a proper moral base wo we need not tear fear narrow fanaticism but Sn instead stead well achieve tho the breath that includes all humanity often we hear ot of certain individuals being classed as religious or otherwise it seems adems to me that tho the man who Is truly moral is proving in basolt the ox stance bt bf a religious nature so in teaching right behavior t to 0 boys boya and girls we are awaking in them the religious sense it la Is th the 0 design deign 0 of seminary vork to teach right behaviour which will help insure a proper and sure foundation lor for education no matter what held field it may be in lot let it not bo be said that there la Is a do desire to discredit the teaching of science by those who are convinced of tha value of seminary vork the more we know of the wonders of the universe the more we must marvel at the god who created it science does not prove religion false science only reports on what it dia discovers covers in nature it seems to me that iscle when studied under ideal conditions would tend to awaken that religious sense within us ri for or one I 1 should desire to seo see every boy and girl schooled jn in the wonders ol of nature so that they would see a religious significance of the things they live so that could live each day with the conviction that they aro are here tor for a purpose it la Is oun desire to lo make the seminaries institutions that will pot not only help the students to discover that high purpose but to help maintain it it Is not for me to say lust just who are pagan people however one thing filing I 1 have noticed among many people the world over that mankini mankind in general Is religious at the same time recognizing the tact fact that it exists in many forms As long as this condition exists I 1 feel it highly important to observe and teach all students the need ot of proper respect for other mens religious iou s belief and habits it Is interesting but sad to note somo results ot of our educational system likely we all alf know of cases where students are bewildered some are uncertain as to whether or not it isa superstition that we have I 1 such a thing ansa as a soul they are equally ally as uncertain about the bible in tact fact the desire to be modern often leads them to think that they must deny all the simple old teachings to do sure we want the now new but old truths are just as ab worthwhile as they ever were religious education Is trying koput to put a new value on an old truth that life should be lived nobly in the sight of led god and our follow beings it Is difficult culi to say objectively just what part the seminaries are playing in providing ideal educational advantages but all those interested in them and those who have benefited and associated themselves with its activity are high in their praise of its value I 1 feel sure of the value of religious e education uca on to me there ere Is s no doubt but that it plays aa important part in the achieving that well rounded out education that james J davis U S secretary of labor speaks of in conclusion of this article may I 1 quote him in part let us till fill our boys and girls with a love of beauty and a desire to find and live it what Is morality but fineness and beauty of conduct yet even chiq Is not all it la Is not enough to win the approval of your fellow beings for peace of his soul a man must have the arp approval of his god let us have the moral braning that will give us the al approval of our fellow beings lot us have the religious training that will ad give us gods blessings 11 I 1 BURNS L FINLIN FINLINSON S ON |
