Show interesting STAKE conference the last quarterly conference of the box elder stake which convened in this city on saturday and sunday was one of the most interesting and instructive conferences ot of the year th the e visitors were elder joseph fielding smith of the apostles quorum and elder hyrum byrum G smith presiding patriarch of the church both ot of whom expounded the doctrine ot of mormonism Mormont sm in a clear and convincing manner the schedule ot of meetings as aa previously announced was carried out and the attendance at the sunday sessions especially was fully up to the he standard the tha tabernacle being packed the first session on saturday was a special council meeting ot of all the presiding heads ot of the stake priesthood and the theme ot of the meeting was personal responsibility president S norman lee opened the discussion and pointed out the difficulty experienced in getting instructions that come from tho the head of the church put pul into effect in the wards and organizations of 0 the stake he also called attention to tha indifference on the part of 0 many church members to assume responsibility the visiting church leaders followed up this line of thought and made frequent reference to the stake statistical report tor for the nine months of the present year pointing out the defects in the report which represent a slackness in that department part ment on the part ot of the people one of these is attendance upon sacrament meetings and the bishops and ward teachers were urged to take up this matter in a vigorous and definite manner and labor to convert the pe people 0 1 to a desire and determination to do their duty at the saturday afternoon session president lee made a few opening remarks in which he pointed out the responsibility that accompanies the cbearing lb bearing earing of the holy priesthood he iwas was follo followed Ned by bishop brigham wright who expressed himself as feeling well vell and interested in the work and reported die in the fourth ward sister emma anima evans recently returned from a mission to the northwest gesn ean states gave an interesting account I 1 ot of her labors and bore a strong testimony to the truthfulness of the gospel elder hyrum G smith read from the section ot of the doctrine covenants passages bearing upon the duties of the priesthood and the blessings that follow the faithful performance of all duties ile he declared that it is only possible to obtain a fullness i of the blessings of the lord thru the priesthood and men should appreciate late the blessing of bearing and magnifying it elder joseph fielding smith de dared that no man receives the priesthood but that he makes a most solemn covenant to magnify it it he idies does not verbally make such covenant I 1 lie he inwardly assents to it for the priesthood is conveyed only upon the promise of 0 the individual who receives it to magnify it ile he then gave a most comprehensive elucidation ot of what is meant by the new and everlasting covenant lie he said that some men hold to the belief that it is the temple marriage covenant but the speaker read from the doctrine covenants to 1 prove that the new and 1 everlasting covenant is baptism into ithe the chuich of 0 jesus christ of latter nay day saints the marriage cove covenant i is a new and everlasting covenant that is embraced in the new and everlasting ler er covenant which in other words lwoods is all the other covenants plus ithe the priesthood or the fullness of 0 the gospel all officers in the church ought to appreciate their callings and bo be diligent in magnifying them on sunday morning there were 1175 kiil in attendance all the sunday school children of the stake were invited to bo be present the four our city schools occupying their usual places with the i members of the schools irom from outside awards wards being seated where they desir cd the first hour was given over to a program by the schools from outside of temple of the lord joseph joseoh N stohl followed with an urgent ale a tor fon fathers and mothers to be interested in the teachings their children are receiving in the various organizations and he pointed out what a privilege it is to young people to be asked to take part in church work elder hyrum G smith read tho the song in our lovely deseret and asked the audience it if it geleves what it sings he urged the children to understand the sentiment in the songs and then carry out in their lives those teachings he hoped the boys and girls would never get too big to feel the need and bo be worthy of the blessings bies blessings sings ot of the lord elder J fielding smith emphasized the remarks ot of the previous speaker in urging the children and the fathers fathera and mothers to teel feel what we sing and to accept and practice the doctrine set forth in the song he told an interesting story to illustrate the point point that children dont always pay attention and get the choul thought of the songs they sing the congregation sang tor for opening and closing numbers the songs in our lovely deseret joseph smiths first prayer and the lord Is my light the prayers were by elders charles H skidmore and denmark jensen A at the afternoon session there were 1060 in attendance the opening song by the the choir choi was the hymn come come ye saints and the invocation was offered by bishop thomas wheatley after which the choir sang the selection come where the lillies blo bloom om elder wm win C horsley presented the general and local church authorities who were un unanimously ani sustained ined elder joseph fielding smith was the first speaker and he read from athe the stake report showing the inactivity of those holding the Melchi sedek priesthood and he deplored the tact fact that so many were listed in the department part ment of inactivity without excuse ile he declared that the possession odthe ot the priesthood entitles entities the holder toa fullness of 0 the blessings of the they father ather and a fullness of the asi de beso alaan in ithe the temple of the lord biord and that with a companion it is a serious thing for a man to violate his covenants and say 1 I will not labor for the max man who pursues that course will eventually lose his priesthood and when that calamity comes to him it debars him from entrance into the celestial kingdom the law of exaltation means responsibility and man must abide the celestial law here in part as it is given or he cannot inherit the kingdom and abide the law hereafter the choir sang the selection tile the I 1 serenade and elder hyrum G smith was the next speaker he read from the scriptures to show that it is up to man to choose life or death and in elucidating that thought he urged the people to cultivate the presence of 0 the spirit of the lord in order that they might be able to choose life and receive a fullness of the fathers I 1 blessings the spirit ot of the devil is the spirit of excuse making which blinds men to the responsibilities they have taken upon themselves and justifies dusti justifies fies them in the committing of sin free agency is a god given right but man is held responsible I
