Show r WHERE SHALL WE CONNECT to Brig brignal narn city is given the responsibility po of saying to the state road commission just where the state highways which lead into the city shall connect up with the municipal thoroughfare ough fare in order to maintain traffic on oil through the city and connect with the end of the state road on the other side of 0 the city last year the state road commission designated box elder canion canyon route into cache valley a state highway but the commission only assumed jurisdiction over that part of the highway outside the corporate limits of brigham city there is a distance of a little over eight miles from this city to the county line at the top of tile the divide north 0 of mantua and from that point on thru the entire ent ire length of cache valley the state road commission lias has let the contract tor for the construction of a hard surface roadway the work being already under way the matter of paving an eighteen eigl iteen foot strip front from this city to the top of the divide Is w batting aft in g upon brigham city to designate the route the highway shall traverse in i entering and passing through this city so far as the convenience of the automobile traffic I 1 is concerned that would best be served by having the route turn south from main street at fifth south for by following that route tile motorist would not becom be compelled to drive a single rod out of his way in going from the south into cache valley or in going from that valley to orden ogden and salt lake but the ae convenience of tile the motorist is not always considered nor does that individual object to the practice either cities that lie off to one side of a main highway ligh way such as does docs brigham city in this present case make it a point to compel the auto tourists to drive out of his way a few blocks in order that he might be shown about the city citi band and so it not infrequently happens that the state slate road passing through a alt city designated along devious routes in order to get the auto traveling public to drive through as much of the city as possible this is accomplished by the municipality working in harmony with the state and setting up road mar markers kersat at every turn to direct the traveler where the city wants iii him in to go and the traveler not being acquainted with fth the town naturally concludes that the way pointed out is the only way at least he never makes makei any complaint for even if he did know lie he was being led a few blocks out ot of his bis way the satisfaction of passing thru a live community is as great to the traveler as it is to the municipality to show itself to the stranger so far as the cites interests are concerned the cache valley route ought to come along alain street to forest firest and then turn east in order to make the highway more attractive and easy of passage it would would be a splendid thing to continue the road straight east past the merrell JIe mill to the east cast side of box elder creek and following along the east side of the creek to the mouth of the can on by establishing this route all the traffic coming down the canyon would avoid the death curve onto the present bridge over the creek and would pass straight along and land right in the heart of 0 the b business 2 1 1 alues district of the city and that portion head ed south would then travel through the business section and ana oh out ot of the city A splendid cement bridge over the creek near the in mill ill could be made into a massive and artistic structure of welcome and the winding road from the canyon could be made a boulevard ot of but here is another argument by designating east forest street the state highway brigham city will get a wonderful lift in the way of paving and beautifying that street the street will be paved someday that is certain but if the state comes in and helps the cost of paying for foe the entire pavement on one side between main and first east street ani and the cost of paving on both sides between second and third east and between fourth and fifth east and all th estreet intersections ter will not have to be borne by brigham city these blocks designated are city squares and the high school blocks are property which cannot be assessed so the city would havo have to boiar bear the entire expense of paving that block also it if tile the state cooperates and pays for an eighteen foot strip the cost to the tax payers of brigham would be materially reduced and that saving would be no small item the the additional advantage 3 of havn hav th tb state highway pass pans ever th bit t a so apparent as to no s for that street runs right into the hoart of the city and at the same time under the plan suggested above would furnish quick and easy connection with the big highway into cache valley brigham city ought to interest it self in getting this link of hig highway hway connected up the cache valley people are alive and working on their highway and they h have ave no other way of getting out of their valley than thru wellsville Wells villo and box elder cal canyons dyons let us dispose of 0 this problem by connecting up the hard surface highway and at the same time push the matter of extending the hard surface road on out into the valley in order that the county seat may be in direct connection with the great farming community that lies away to the north and west brigham city should interest herself in the improvement of all the highways leading into the city |
