Show PROFITEER DRIVE driff ORDERED BY 01 U S vigorous prosecution of profiteers under the provisions ot of the food control act has been ordered in instructions In received yesterday by W W ray united states district attorn attorney eyt from the department of justice at washington agton As a result of the enactment ot of the food control act with its amendment by congress last week federal district attorneys are furnished with laws which will permit them to indict profiteers As amended the law provides that only reasonable profits be made on all necessities of life this includes wearing apparel food and other necessities essi ties the letter received by mr ray from the department ot of justice contained the fol following loing you will note that this enlarges the scope ot of the original act by including wearing apparel 1 I you will note also that it pra scribes penalties tor for the violation ot of the provision 0 of section 4 ot of the food control rol act this section makes unlawful among other things unfair practices and the making of unjust or unreasonable rates or charges this will enable you to prosecute profiteers you are urgently requested and instructed ted to see that this measure is vigorously enforced in your district the letter also informed mr ray that the investigation bureau of 0 the department of justice is at his disposal and will furnish the best cooperation in securing evidence tor for prosecution and instructed him to take measures to speed the work where the handling of the situation is not sufficiently aggressive the letter also stated that the success or failure of the present campaign depends largely upon the dis brict attorney and invited special attention in the work I 1 mr ray said that for some time in for or the department of justice have been conducting a search here bere for evidence of 0 profiteering and that the communication received yesterday la Is especially significant in view of the fact that a grand jury has been called for or next month while mr air ray was noncommittal and would not discuss specific cases ot of he intimated that some cases had been uncovered in tills this state by department of justice agents tribune |
