Show BOUT THE NORTH RIM OF THE GRAND CANYON uk re Foll following Dwing is furnishes the news by thomas mckee of the wiley camp at bright angel point BRIGHT ANGEL POINT the Sout southern heni ter terminus in in us of the grand canyon highway is bright angel point on the north rim the point itself is a peninsula averaging aging half a mile wide and luts juts out into the canyon its full length of three miles at its tip the sightseer sight seer stands upon a pin pill vacle cade of rock with the great chasm at hi his s feet no where else on either rim can one advance so far fai out into the canyon on practically level ground this is the distinguishing feature of bright angel point THE PUBLIC CAMP GROUND on the point and near tile the rim is the excellent camp ground maintained by the boveri government ment for the use of the camping public it has unitary sanitary conveniences and cement fireplaces fire places for cooking wood is plentiful and two fine cold springs furnish an abundance of pure water THE WYLIE CAMP between the public camp ground and the rim stands the wylie camp with accommodations for thirty to forty guests it furnishes the best of beds and meals for those who seek the comforts of a first class hotel in the wilderness i it is now in its seventh season on the point and renders to the traveling public the same service that has made the wylie name distinguished for over forty years in in the national parks gasoline and oil are always kept on hand SADDLE HORSES AND SIDE TRIPS for those who wish to enjoy the gr great eat variety of views afforded by the canyon and its environs jensen and vaughn main main tai tain 1 n a large number of well tra trained ined horses and mules for saddle and pack service with light wa wagons kons for those who choose that method of sight seeing the trip crip into the canyon itself is one of the most popular and enables the visitors to reach the river and to td vi view 1 ew the stupendous gorge from below while trips both short and long upon the rim reveal the widely differing spectacles for which the north rim has become famous each evening a representative 0 o of J jensen ensen and vaughn visits the bublic camp ground and the wylie camp to take orders for horses and vehicles for themert the next day THE CANYON at bright angel point ibe can yon bouis is a mile deep and thirteen miles wide the north rim stands 1200 to 1500 feet higher than the south rim with an immense view in prospect but unless you have seen the canyon at sunset sun set or at sun sunrise rise isea you have not really seen it at all under the midday mid day sun a blue haze fills the chasm veiling its bright colors and nd concealing its ts peaks r yu tit 4 t AA si t and promontories when the suns rays slant from either east or west however tho the haze disappears the brilliant coloring re turns and the pinnacles cast shadows which reveal their huge forms clearly A full evening spent on the rim I 1 is never forgotten CLIMATIC conditions the canyon rim has a climate all its own never hot and never cold the canyon depths are semitropical semi tropical and the warmed air rising at night envelops the rim keeping the temperature equable and pleasant frost is unknown cnown there in the summer months though blankets blanket sare are always necessary for sleeping comfort and their are no mosquitoes you never need worry about your radiator on the rim nor need to break the ice from your water vessels in the morning A few miles back from the rim etim the night temperatures like the canyon are what might naturally be elpe expected acted on a mountain top nearly 9 feet high cold and often crosty frosty THE KAIBAB DEER in tile the forest is the largest herd of deer in the world numbering about fifteen thousand these are met all along the highway but at night they gather in numbers to graze in tile the open spaces space s of the parks a few miles back from the rim those who wish to see these deer herds and at the same time pass the night in the pleasant climatic conditions prevailing at the rim drive over to the parks after supper arri arriving ying there as the deer do just before dark by the aid of auto headlights head lights and spotlights this drive through the parks show the deer to advantage and makes a delightful evening trip over fine roads As the deer do not come into open ground until dusk the sport them must be of photographing undertaken w while hile they are suu still in the forest and the light is good at the wylie C camp amp the deer are quite tame and here many fine pictures of them are being taken daily IES As there are no supply stores south of kanab and fredonia replenish their campers should leaving these before provisions towns complete stocks are kept at the stores of both places further in fornia information tion will be cheerfully giann at bri bright angel the wylie camp either point by and vaughn or r jensen |
