Show The Standard, in allusion to an ill-tempered ill-tempered paragraph in the Journal a few days since, has the following: The Logan Journal is making a great "brag" because Cache, a democratic county, went democratic, and it tyrannically tyran-nically tells the Proyo Dispatch to tend to its own business, and if Thb Dispatch Dis-patch had done that Proyo would have gone democratic. Now if the Journal will look oyer the field in Utah I i county it will find that The Dispatch did 10J times more for the democratic party in Utah county than did the Journal for ;ta party in Cache county. Utah county with its sugar factory was expected to give a 300 republican majority, ma-jority, but went about that much democratic. dem-ocratic. If Thb Dispatch did this work, and we believe it did, how does it compare with Cache vailey, which was expected to go 700 democratic majority and actually pulled through with only a little more than half that number? We thank the Standard for its good offices in this matter, but we feel sure that by this time the Journal is thoroughly ashamed of itself, and in a few days it will apologize handsomely for its bad temper and bad manners, both. i I The demand of the Japanese govern- I ment of 400,030.000 Yen as a war in- 1 demnity is pretty steep, but if it will I result in drawing out our surplus of I I both minted and bar silver, Americans I j will look on the demand with much i favr. Since the repeal ofth8 8her- I man purchase act the demand for s il- I ver has been gradually falling off, and I of course a far lower price has pre- I vailed. If nothing is done, or some I such thing as this Japanese demand Is not done or made, silver must in- I . evitably go lower and lower until it I reaches the level of the bas9 metals. I It isn't a cheerful thing for Utah to 1 contemplate, yet she stands in im- 1 mediate presence of that very out- I come. Although the canvas3 of the returns 1 from Utah county is not officially com- I plete, we learn that on tbeir face the I returns give the assurance that all the I ' w emocratic candidates for county of. ncers there, are elee'ed by majorities ranging from 20 to over 100. This may not cause every politician in Utah county to smile, but it will bring gratification grati-fication to the loyal democrats,, who form the majority of the voters in that county. Salt Lake Herald. o We are among those politicians of Utah county who are very much gratified grati-fied by the result, and who believe with a fair open fight and a free field we can raise that majority next year to 400. ' The Herald's argument on the matter mat-ter of free coinage yesterday was very strong. Free coinage, or , rather, silver upon an equality wi'h gold is one of the necessities of the general financial situation, not in Utah, not in tbe United States alone, but over the entire en-tire world. We would see it restored simply to relief the general situation and leave Utah to gather her own proper share of the general advantage. The republican patriots are very much exercised for fear that their late celebration in Salt Lake was premature. They do not regard Frank Cannon's election a sufficient cause for a territorial terri-torial blow-out, but that with the constitutional con-stitutional conyention would have been considered ample. It may turn out that the convention is democratic and, the fat would be beautifully in the fire, sure enough. TnEY are now trying to make a Scotch nobleman of Governor-elect Mclntyre of Colorado. It would be more to his credit to establish the character char-acter of a noble American. We regard the latter as the higher rank of the two. The Japaneee should fight as do civilized nations. The mutillation of the bodies of the dead, and tbe killing of women and children will not be tolerated. Tbe Christmas holidays are near at hand. Yet the Christmas advertising has not commenced, strange to ezy. Judging from the length of the document, doc-ument, the president could not have been yery sick. It is a huge affair. : The president's meeaage had everything every-thing in it, save and except a free coinage recommendation. What an opportunity the president missed to make hirnsalf immortal! The holiday season will be yery gay judging from present appearances. |
