Show PREST'S MESSAGE Some Speculations as to Its Probable Contents. IS UTAH PDRCHASEABjlE? If eo She is Surely Republican at the Next Election The Southern Pacific and Su-S&t Su-S&t Trust Will Offer, to Buy Her Two First Senators Outright. . Washiagton, Nov. 19. The chief interest in political circles in Washington Washing-ton at the present time centers upon the president's message. All realize that this a critical time in the history of the nation and that it behooves the president to make some radical recommendation recom-mendation on the money question in order to meet the demands of increasing increas-ing business and brinft order out of chaos on that question. "Under these circumstances rumors have been flying about for some time as to what will be the tenor of the president's message. Some of the wiseacres who pretend to hold the woof of politics in their hands say, with convincingearnestness, that there will be a recommendation for an entire change in the monetary system of the government, thouch the nature of the expected change is not divulged. However, one thing is certain. There will be a strong effort on the part of the silver men at this session of congress con-gress to pass a free silver bill and have tue president take action on it. It is by no means certain, however, that sach a measure could run the gauntlet of the gold bugs in the senate. They have looked upon the republican party es the "conservative," or gold ideas on the money question, and when the people of the west voted for that uartv they immediately congratulated themtelves on the deatn of the Bilver Eenti-nnLia win-.t they considered its ttronghjW. Therefore, the republicans, republi-cans, more than ever, are aligning themselves agar.; st justice W the white ineial. ' i The people of the west, whoae every interest is bound up with the cause of the white metal, whose mills are shut cown, vi hose crops sell for a song and whose labor is curtailed, made a great mistake when they declined to vote with the democrats this time. They might have had some cause for grievance griev-ance because of the circumstances sur rounding the passage of the tariff bill and they miht also have partaken of the feelinK that alwas makes an administration ad-ministration unpopular in an off ear. But they should have had more consideration con-sideration for their bread and butter than to rush blindly on and place in power a party that cannot do them any good and must certainly do them a great deal of harm. Their action has practically assured the republicans of victory in 1896 un less the democrats of the west and Bsnth can force the nomination of a free silver candidate by their party. As it is, the gold bug democrats, as well as the bold bug republicans, are thinking that the silyer sentiment is dying out and that now it is only held by a few bloated bondholders who own mines in the west. They cannot realize that it is a living issue in which the very life blood of the debtor western states ia bound up. They only know that their own golden store is made more valuable by the keeping of silver out of its proper place, and how that they have been encouraged by the returns from the silver states they see no necessity for sarrender. They mean to make the fight in both of the old parties and try to hold their conventions. conven-tions. However, it is really doubtful whether the democrats of the west an'J south can be beaten in their endeavors to pledge the party to western acd a free silver man for the presidency. The men of the south know that their people have been brought to a realization realiza-tion that their prosperity is bound up in the silver question. They know that their plantions have decreased in value and their debts become more burdensome burden-some since the republican crime of 1873 and they are determined to have free silver one way or the other. The break in the eolid south in this last election was made because of this determination The gold bug democrat? tiied to control con-trol things in Missouri, Texas. North Carolina, Tennesses, Kentucky and some of the othf r stales of the soutb, fcnd the Deople simply rose up and hit them. The astuto "politicians know well that this is no small blow. The op;? meant it and thev will repeat it unless the pirty favors free silver. So it is hardly possible that the southern democrats will be favoring the gold standard in ihe next convention, though VYhM pfreet is now n aking very effoit to h-ive the edtr.ini trati.-.n use all its powers m kef ping these states in line. 1 he nt ws that Ulati ha i 1 e n Bffe:-'G Bffe:-'G . by the elun:n of the off year wss quito disappoint::- to the democrats in. Washington, for thfy respect Mr. Rawlins and believe that if ever a pen-pie pen-pie owed anything to any man, the people of Utah owed a great deal of grat'tude to him. All the silver men and a great many of the gold men like him and will do anything in their power to help him along. However, all of them realizj that the slump was not due to personality, and as one of them remarked to the" Herald correspondent today: "The people were mad on general principles and they were determined waliop the party, Jf the best men in the c- untry had been put up against yellow dogs the dogs would have got there. For that reason am not surprised sur-prised at the result in Util." Mr. Rawhns went down in a dis- tinguished company, wl 5Hi included! the leaders of the taril and silver fight. . - The republicans will open their barrels bar-rels to the widest extent sad are prepared pre-pared to buy Utah's tirst two senators outright. Tbey have speiit thousands of dollars in the last campaign, jloney literally flowel into the close conges-eional conges-eional districts, fr the protection cormorants cor-morants had been early prepared for the fat frying process and tbey were compelled to give up a great dual of their illgotten spoil There is another fat frying bfe scheduled and the money will be poured into Utah by the Sugar truBt and the Southern Pacific; compauy, etch of whom would like very well to have a few n ore senators to look'alter their interests If Utah is purchase tble in the next election then it is safely republican. |
