Show Ix a S.L. Herald special this morning morn-ing Hoke Smith is reported as saying regarding the Uintah reservation: "I would not advise any prospective settlers to camp on the border with any expectation that U.ey will be able within with-in the next three years to enter the reservation and secure claims under homestead' laws. Jt ia my intention to exact full justice to the U iutahs in this matter and eea that they get everv cent their lands will brine. I do not inUnd that they shall be traded out of their lands unfairly by the white man s superior ability. No treaty that does not give them full justice will be negotiated nego-tiated by any commissioners appointed by me or shall pass my desk approved. This is my general Indian policy and ! while it may not suit those who desire to get property from Indians for nothing, I shall stick to it aa lone as I have any power over Indian affairs." g |
