Show TEACHERS ASK FOR SALARY the following correspondence was recently had between the school teachers of this county and the board of education the committee representing the teachers asked that it be published so it is given in full herewith brigham city utah march 7 1918 to the board of education box elder county gentlemen ent lemen As a committee elected by the teachers of box elder county at our last institute to set before your honorable body our position and opinions and to make entreaty that measures of at a remedial nature be taken we beg to ask your attention to the state of tile the teachers position in the last year or more our entire industrial and social system has undergone very great changes very material increases have affected general costs in all living necessities and people everywhere in all other occupations have received corresponding increases in the remuneration tor for their work with men and women engaged in school service such relative increase in remuneration has not followed working to the contrary in fact is the movement sounded with considerable emphasis threatening to shorten the length of the school year in this respect especially tile the profession Is growing increasingly uncertain furthermore in the condition of insecurity I 1 and absence of protection in cases of sickness the teacher finds just reason for complaint and dissatisfaction employees as a general class are now being protected against sickness and incapacitation by such and other measures of humane considerations as the employers liability laws Work mens compensation laws and pensions etc to the teacher no such assurance and protection has ever been regularly extended he is employed on an the basis of a day laborer I 1 with the risk at all times present of becoming ill or otherwise incapacitated even in the proper discharge of his duty and frequently resultant from dangers to which lie he is subjected in his work at this point in the brief exposition of our case may w N e call your attention to the very general sentiment existing among our patrons and citizens of all classes in agreement that these are the facts of the case and that something should be done to obtain tor for teachers in the public school increased salaries commensurate with the highly increased cost of living and that they should receive other guarantees and assurances compatible with the spirit sp irit of the times and the responsibility and dig inley of their work representing the teachers in their expressed wishes and resting our case upon the foregoing as a brief exposition of the present situation we bere herewith iere submit three requests which we trust you will find it possible to grant and incorporate into the contracts of the present year first that you find it possible to carry into effect the recommendations recommendation i of state superintendent of schools dr gowans in the matter of increasing teachers salaries second that teachers shall he be employed for the school year as a designated period of time during which time the lie teacher shall be at the full service of the board of education and for which he shall receive full school yearly salary without being subjected subject etl to deductions tor for any un forseen elmure closure of schools over which the teacher has no control third that in case of the sickness of the teacher he shall be paid in full for the first week and one halt half salary for the period ol of sickness exceeding one week with provisions for the reasonable safeguard of the board of education i very respectfully yours TEACHERS OP OF BOX ELDER COUNTY J W WARD ORSON A christensen A AC C OLSEN J W PETERS MRS F A HINCKLEY VEDA HUNSAKER W J JGLENN GLENN committee brigham city utah march alarca 11 1918 to ito committee representing teachers ot of box elder county ladies and Gent gentlemen lemeh i the contents ot of your bour letter has been on page two TEACHERS ASK FOR INCREASED SALARY continued irom from first page given careful consideration the principles set forth therein appeal t to Us kis as being right we wish to assure you that it is the desire of the board boar to adhere to these principles just as nearly as possible within the legal and financial limitations over abich the board has no control we are pleased that the outlook tor for the coming year is somewhat brighter than it has been for the past two years hoping that we may retain your confidence and kind cooperation in our struggle tor for better conditions we remain yours truly BOARD OF EDUCATION box elder county school distract distrct dy by C 11 II skidmore superintendent |
