Show THE ELECTION CASES. Yesterday the commission arrived at the conclusion that there had been fraud in the election cases from Sanpete San-pete county, and the commission reached the conclusion that it would issue the certificates to the republican candidates from the tally lists and without with-out other evidence. The evident frauds were committed without any knowledge of the commi-sion, its clerks or attendants, attend-ants, and hence the results as in ii-cated. ii-cated. This should not end the investigation inves-tigation by any" means. The search Bhould be continued until tbe guilty parties are found and a jaBt rebuke be administered. The commission has acted in perfect good talth all the time, and the result arrived at is competent proof of this. Their only anxiety has been to arrive at the truth. In view of this result it should follow that the Tribune and all other influences which have been hounding the members of the commission should make amends by publicly stating that the members are fully relieved from any and every taint or suspicion ol fraud, either attempted at-tempted or contemplated. The purpose pur-pose has been to turn up bottom Xacts and to let the blame fall where the guilt was located. Of course the conclusion conclu-sion reached settles the fact that there is to be a republican majority In tbe convention. As bad as this may be, it )B still better than fraud as much as we desire to eeo a democratic majority in the constitutional con-stitutional convention, yet infinitely , better that than that tbe democrats hold it and owe the ascendancy to fraud. The result is not complimentary compliment-ary we grant, but we feel proud that no taint can attach to the democratic commission. We are aware that in our American system great latitude is allowed al-lowed to partisanship, yet when this latitude goes beyond the point of falr-. falr-. ness and honesty, it must be checked by the strong hand of justice, and every good citizen of the state must rally tc tbe side of law and justice and say to -the perpetrators of fraud, begone, be-gone, we will have nothing to do with you. It is a subject of no little eatis-3 eatis-3 faction that in all this examination the courts have had the active co-operation, not of the commission only, but of every reputable democrat in the territory. The end and the only end Bought waB justice. That has been found and now nothing is required but a certification of the honest i esult. It is true that this conclusion settles the Sanpete cases but it by no means settles others equally as important, and equally covered up and clouded in doubt. Let the commission proceed to the end as it has done so far, according accord-ing to law, and let the blame fall where it may. We cannot afford to hold a majority unless it is clear un-mistakeablH un-mistakeablH and totallv relieved r f anv suspicion of fraud or wrong doing on the part of any man or anv influence whatever. We are very sure that the above are the sentiments of any and every honest hon-est democrat in Utah county as they - are unquestionably of this paper. Doubtless this matter is the uncontemplated uncon-templated result by men who have had little or no experience in the conduct of elections. Men untrained to the clerkly duties of conductors of popular elections are liable to make these mistakes mis-takes and others of a si miliar nature. Intent to defraud must be established ere fraud can be charged. Most certainly cer-tainly that intent is totally absent in this case. Now let good democrats everywhere unite with honest republicans republi-cans in condemning those who haye wrongfally and recklesily conspired to defeat the popular will as expressed by the ballot in the last election. The people will look for the full elucidation elu-cidation of this matter with the keenest pos.-ible Interest. |
