Show WHAT IS THE ISSUE? We would be heartily glad if we could find out on what iBSue or isjues our republican f rienda are going before the people upon this campaign, but we cannot even guess what is going to be their rallying cry this fall. We do not want them to come oyer into oui camp en masee; we are not prepared to receive re-ceive and entertain tnem. Oar cotcm. in its last night's iEBue abandoned its strongholds, and pretends pre-tends that we are in possession of all its defenses. If this is true, all right; we do not intend to dwell in such places but have no objection to our neighbor trying to reform. It eays: "Vicious Blander wherever and how- ever circulated will surely react against them (the slanderers) and in favor of thoee against whom the slanders are uttered." We cordially and hbartil? welcome our neighbor in its effort to join us on this higher ground, and think it would be a good idea to keep this at the head of the columns of both Provo papers during this rampaign. Thi3 ends that old issue. It also eays: "The democrats met in conyention and deliberately put up a Mormon ticket, which is all right enough, for a man's religion ought not to be considered." Now we pretty nearly agree with that. We did meetjn body's religion, but we have not got a "Mormon ticket" but simply reccg-uized reccg-uized that a majority of our voters are Mormons, and it happens, very properly, prop-erly, that a majority of our candidates are of the same claes of persons. It happens aliso that a majority of Mormon Mor-mon voters are democrats, and we haye no fault to find with that, and we are not going to say that the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith prophesied falsely when he Eaid that "a majority i of tbc Latter-day Saints will always be right." TI ..i ends tne issue of "church influ-enc. influ-enc. . ' Te have got a constitution drafted draft-ed bj hat was called a "republican" cony ttion which makes the granting of ;t ties impracticable, and that eni. ; t bounty issue. Tt. cracvof Utah are unani-mou7)v unani-mou7)v " vor of the free coinage ol eilye - - ye so declared in every way rr .: ..a . and although the republic re-public pUtt - ica is not what free eil-ver eil-ver men .'O mi approve, there is no probability of -;r.r republican opponents oppon-ents making cn ieue of that. The repubLcans have abandoned their theory of centralization of power, joining us in calling ior its diffusion by preparing for Utah donninz the robes j of 6tate sovereignty, and we are all j united in grateful rejoicing that Utah will soon be a full fledged state. That issue is a bsck number. The McKinley tariff is a thing of the past an.i is only remembered ps a dark cloud that for a brief time obscured the reys of tie sua. Its effects are passing pas-sing away.we hope lorever, and it is no longer an issue. We aek our republican friends not to come and join us all at once; give us some issue so that you may be able to maintain and keep up your organization organiza-tion a respectable minority is always ! useful to keep majorities from yield ing to an element Jiat creeps into all parties, and will work evil if not kept in check. We sincere! desire that every man and woman who believes in democracy, demo-cracy, or in republkan'em, ehould be true to their conviction?, and wherein we differ in our views, that each should siate his or her own position fairly and let us have clean ct issues, if any there are, and reason together in a spirit of christian forbearance, and 'God speed the right " liut still we ask. What is the issue this campaign? |
