Show PREST.PARTRIDCE Elders David John and Reed Sraoot Counselors. SUCH IS THE PRESIDENCY Of th9 Utah Stafte of Zton Entirely Satisfactory Satis-factory to the People Report of Sunday's Sun-day's Sessions of the Stake Quarterly Conference. The quarterly conference of the Utah Stake oi Z:on was better attended on yeEterday than on Sunday. At both meetings crowds who came out to attend at-tend werj obliged to return home, not being able to get seats, so crowded was the large stake tabernacle. At the morning cession, Apostles BriKham Youmj and John Henry Kmith and President Gtorge Q. Cannon Can-non were the speakers, Apostie Young's remarks were brief. He spoke of the necessity of union among the saints and referred to the faithfulness of the early workers in the church, to the many hardships they endured and cited the unparalleled prosperity that followed their labors. God is always with the Litter-day saints and all their trials tend toward exaltation. Apostle Smith's theme waB God's watchfulness oyer His chosen people. When any go astray or . become way. ward usually something is brought to bear upon them by the Almighty that checks them in their downward course and-causes them to pause and consider where they are going, and they usually then return to the straight and narrow nar-row path upon which they should ever go. 1'iesident Cannon's theme was the salvation and exaltation in the celestial celes-tial kingdom which Latter-day sainta above ail things pray for most fervent ly. To attain this salvation and exaltation exal-tation continued faithfulness is necessary. neces-sary. The object of coming to conferences confer-ences is that we may have every inclination in-clination to sin that may be in our hearts corrected, to have our faith strengthened by hearing the testimony cf others, to hear instruction and advice ad-vice now we may continue to live In the love of God and to go away repentant repent-ant and witfi a renewed determination to liye nearer to God. President Cannon Can-non cautioned the saints against practices prac-tices and habits that ultimately lead to the cultivation of a spirit of apostacy and to apostacy itself. Apostacy is a grievous sin aud incurs the great displeasure dis-pleasure of God. A Latter-day saint has been given the lixht, to deny it afterwards grieves our 'ather in Heaven Hea-ven sorely. One of the most common practices that leadB to apostacy ia the nabit Borne indulge in of speaking against the priesthood of the Son oi God,thereby displeasing the Father. Another An-other thing that greatly displeases Him and causes Him to withdraw His spirit from men is for those men to become impure in heart, to look upon a woman to lust after her, to commit adultery, f rnication, to cultivate lustful desires or to otherwise defile the tabernacle He has given us so that He cannot occupy oc-cupy it with a portion of His holy spirit spir-it Let us all resolve to serve God and to be pure in heart. AFTERNOON MEETING. President Wilford Woodruff announced an-nounced that the spirit of the Lord had revealed to the first presidency of the church and the members of the quorum of the twelve apostles who had met together on Saturday in prayerful consultation upon the subject that it was the will of the Lord that Elder Edward Partridge should be president of the Utah Stake of Zion, with Eider David John as his first and Elder Reed Smoot as hia second counselor?. The aged president spoke at some length upon the qualities of these men for the positions. His counselors, George Q. Cannon and Joseph i Smith both followed in tha , same strain. President smith dwelt upon tbe necessity of the saints sustaining the presidency cf th8 stake whole-souledly, whole-souledly, being careful to say nothing against them to anyone. If any should hao ill-feeling toward any of the brethren or feel offended or agrieved by them in any way, they should make it a point to go directly to the men themselves with their grievances and get matters set right and not confide their troubles to any third party. From this President Smith branched off, showing the great necessity of Latter-day saints to have c urage to ask counsel from thos9 in authority over them and from their God, and to abide by that counsel which, he assured them, wouM neyer lead them aBtra-. President Partridge and his counselors coun-selors were sustained and ordained and each made a few remarks promising promis-ing faithful service to the best of their ability. T s general authorities of tbe church an all the ttake officers were sua-! tained and after einging and benediction bene-diction tbe conference adjourned. |
