Show PAYSON RELIEF SOCIETY. The Anniversary of he Death of Joseph Smith Fittingly and Appropriately Commemorated by the Ladies. On Thursday, the 27tb, there was. a relief eosiety meeting held for the different dif-ferent branches of that district. An invitation was extended to the stake officers of the society to meet with them. President Mary John, with her counsellors and the other officers, with some others, cordially responded to the invitation. The meeting was held in the Latter day Saint's meeting-house, services commencing at 10:30 a. m. The meeting meet-ing opened by singing, "We Thank Thee, O God, For a Prophet. After prayer Sister Simons, who presided oyer the meeting, made a few remarks followed by Sister John who spoke on various matters pertaining to relief society so-ciety business, etc.6. Sister Marilla Daniels thought as this was the anniyersary of the death of our beloved prophet, Joseph Smith, tnac we ougnc to commemorate it by speaking of him and his labors. Jtbought wo hardly appreciated it . as much as we cuuaia, considering the great amount of good he did while on this earth. She spoke quite lengthily on the subject; was well acquainted with him, and, although young at the time, she knew that he was a prophet of God. She also spoke of the Borrow and mourning among the saints when the news waB brought to Nauvoo that our prophet was dead, slain by wicked men; thought we, as as a people,ought to commemorate the day of his death with appropriate services, and also to celebrate the day of his birth ; exhorted the mothers to teach their children to honor and revere r.is memory, etc. bister Hancock of Payson spoke very feelingly ot the last time she saw the j prophet alive, just as he was leaving tier father's house, where he had been concealed for a time from his enemieB making preparations for his juurney to the west where he intended to go, but a letter came from .Nauvoo that decided de-cided him to return and give himself up to his enemies. Sister Hancock said he paced the floor back and forth many times, saying, "1 go as a lamb to the slaughter," fully realizing that he was going to his death. The afternoon session was opened by singing the hymn,liO Giye Me Back My Prophet Dear," and the services were continued by rrany of the sisters and . one brother, relating incidents connected con-nected with the life of our martyred prophet. There was a calm, holy, peaceful spirit tbroughout.the whole of the services and the many tearful eyes spose of the tender feeling in which his memory is held and revered by the people, After singing "Praise to the Man ho Communed With Jehovah," and the benediction the meeting was dismissed. Sister Simons invited the visiting sisters, with many others, to partake of a sumptuous repast, to which all did full justice and we returned home in the cool of the evening feeling well paid for our trip to Payson.
