Show SHOUP IS ELECTED Idaho Will Have a United States Senator. SIX MOBMON VOTES DID IT They Ware Transferred From Sweet to Shoup Harry Hayward Will Likely Hang: for the Murder of Miss Gin? Blixt's Testimony Will Cause It. Boise. Ida., March 7. George L Shoup was today elected United States senator to succeed himself. The determination deter-mination to elect today was reached at an early hour this morning, when the six southeastern members decided to hold off no longer, fearful lest the remaining Sweet forces and the populists popu-lists would set a trap, the result of which would be that the session would close without election. When the time for balloting arrived this morning, the house of representatives was packed with spectators. Representative Clark, of Bear Lake, county, the first Mormon to vote, arose when his name was called and announced an-nounced that he had worked conscientiously conscien-tiously for the election of Mr. Sweet. He was now satisfied Mr. Sweet could not be elected, and in order that Idaho shouid have its full quota of represen tation in the United States senate, he would vote for his second choice George L, Shoup. The remaining five Mormon members voted for Shoup in their turn. The absence of one member, a populist, pop-ulist, Hanrahan, of Custer county, I made twnty-neven a majority. The vote c was: Shoup, 27; Sweet, 12; Crook, 14. . |
