Show The Herald talks flippantly and voluminously of the slave oligarchy. It knows no more of that than it dees of other democratic party history. The south held property In slaves which the constitution of the United States recognized and guaranteed. The republicans re-publicans of the north intensely jealous of this suurce of wealth to the southerners, south-erners, worked up a semi-religious ad patriotic crusade against the SDuth which resulted in war. The south with fifteen millions of men contended four years with the thirty-five millions of the north and was beaten. That's the whole story and .there was no split to epeak of on the question of slavery. The only question to split was, should the south contribute two billions seven hundred millions to the irantic republicans? repub-licans? They didn't. |
