Show THE LEGISLATIVE. What other legislatures may have accomplished for Utah or the republican republi-can patty, surely it cannot be claimed that the thirty-first has accomplished much in the way of attracting public attention to the wisdom of the measures meas-ures offered. discussed or passed by that body during the session now closed. The mediocrity of the body, as a whole was dense, and not a single man rose above it in any way. It attempted at-tempted to be liberal in its subsidies to private corporations very liberal but w hen it came to the schools or charita ble institutions of the territory, its pinching parsimony was painful to behold. be-hold. The estimate of the insane asylum asy-lum board was cut thirty-seven thousand thou-sand dollars. This was surely an unwise, un-wise, unfeeling and dangerous thing to do. It was not only foolish but reck less economy. The unfortunates confined con-fined there will suffer for this non sense, we fear. The attempt to subsidize subsi-dize private corporations and pursuits represented no such scarcity of money as is supposed to be represented by this cut on the moBt helpless of all our public charities, the home of the in-eane. in-eane. Then, too, the lopping off of the normal branchs of the university is not less reprehensible than this cut. The thirty-first legislature evidently wants it understood that while beet sugar is a great thing fcr Utah, yet trained teachers for our schools are of no importance. im-portance. We in Utah can stand this disgrace, but for the dear Lord's sake don't let it be known outside, or the tide of immigration now setting in our direction will be sent whirling from our doors. Utah has many gave interests but none more valuable than the splendid school spirit just now growing, or beginning be-ginning to erow up here. It is a pity -"" it is dealt such a blow as this. tisot only is HancOT nq to the schools of the territory but it threatens also the yery existence of the university itself. it-self. The republicans are trembling over the general effects of the policies governing this session. One paper went 60 far as to severely condemn the body, a republican paper at that, and admitted that the body had vastly injured in-jured the prospects of that party in the territory. There was no dignity and no evidence ot ability anywhere to be seen in or about it. A petty, tinkering tinker-ing weakness was visible everywhere and in all that was done or attempted, There are evidences of the fact that a boss power everywhere dominated the majority. There was a power somewhere some-where which, though not visible, yet made itself felt to the extent that not one of the ruling majority dared step aside to do an act of loudly called for justice against the bitter prejudices held by the secret influence which owned, controlled and manipulated the body, as the master does the jumping figures in a marionette show. It is over at last and Utah feels no more fear of its unwisdom for the f u lure and only fears the past has planted seeds of trouble which will produce a crop of eyils which will trouble the body politic for many ana many a year. Surely, surely, self-respecting, proud young Utah will never elect another such. ... |
