Show tlcfclcd Circuit Sleward. The Redhill Wesleyan Methodist circuit cir-cuit has just elected a lady, Miss D.iw-eon, D.iw-eon, as one of the circuit stewards. As such she will be entitled', ex-officio, to attend the annual district synod. She is the first lady who has ever been admitted admit-ted to those assemblies. If, which seems probable, the synod should elect her to bo a representative to the conference, the constitutional question will be at once raised whether a woman can be a member mem-ber of the conference. In the constitution constitu-tion adopted when lay represeatation came into operation the term "laymen" runs through the document, and the question will be raised whether legally this can be held to include women The women leaders of classes are increasingly in-creasingly taking part in the circuit quarterly meetings, with the cordial approval ap-proval of both ministers and laymen and to the great advantage of circuit life. There is a growing disposition to place women on committees of the church. It has long been foreseen that the question of their admission to the highest court of the church would sooner or later have to be faced, and if the third London district dis-trict takes advantage of the opportunity presented to it by the action of the Red hill circuit the settlement of this question ques-tion may bo near at hand. Manchester Guardian. The 'balloon burned this afternoon, and the ascension was a failure. A new 90-foot billoon will be brought from Salt Lake, and Miss Herbert will make an ascension and parachute jump on Monday at 10 o'clock. |
