Show DEMOCRATIC PREPARATION, Under the head line, "A dressing Necessity," the Salt Lake Herald of yesterday yes-terday had a timely article which will fit Utah county to a dot. The pressing necessity aimed at was a thorough organization or-ganization of the party, because he republicans are displavine unwonted activity in the thorough organization of their fighting cohorts. We have repeatedly re-peatedly called attention to the import ance of this subject, and have urged that the work of thorough organization be commenced at once. It still lingers. No one steps out to the music of the rally to the old colors, which once fired the fighting blood of the party. We are afraid there is one leading cause why this has not been done, why men approach the task with reluctance if not with extreme repugnance. We have too many office seekers who regard re-gard the good of the party as a secondary sec-ondary consideration to their own selfish sel-fish chances of securing public position. We do not under-rate the importance of public place or public honor. But we Bay it earnestly, ..every selfish ambition ambi-tion must be brought and unselfishly placed upon the altar of the party's good. The man who is not willing to do this is unworthy of public or official honore, and should never under any circumstances become the -bannerman of the party. We have too much of - the rule or ruin idea in our ranks. There are not enough of us who aie ready to sacrifice private interests to public good. The democrat who is only a democrat demo-crat for public office should be reproved re-proved by having his claims repudiated, repudi-ated, not only in the caucus, but in the convention as well as at the polls. It does not look well for a young man i who has a good business to be always " striking for 'everything in' sight, especially es-pecially when after having been refused re-fused he threatens to leave the party and carry hie superior claims and wisdom wis-dom over to the enemy or who spends his time snarling at his fellow democrats demo-crats who fail to see his superlative fitness fit-ness for perpetual office-holding. A close and caretul organization would be able to eliminate much of this evil from the party life, thus removing the causes which too often precipitate the party into defeat. Salt Lake county is not the only county in Utah which has too many selfish aspirants for ol-fice. ol-fice. Utah county has too many and ehe suffered partial defeat last fall from this cause. . Selfish men then sought nominations while stand ing in the light of sure' defeat. We cannot afford any more defeats in order that some ambitious young man may walk off with the glory of a nomination. Our clubs, when organized, could meet these embryotic statesmen before the elements of defeat in their persons could be crystalized; before the prospective pros-pective defeat had struck a chil into the blood, or before the bad selection had given hope to the enemy, The necessity is immediately upon the democracy of Utah county to make one vigorous effort to unite the party into one harmonious whole, actuated by oneeile purpose, that of defeating the enemy rather than to nominate any favorite only to have him mispr-ably mispr-ably defeated and the party ruined thereby. Let Utah county democrats get together and eliminate all selfish and discordant elements ani organize for victory which is within our grasp I whenever we reach out to secure it, I but which will flee from us forever so 1 mg as selfish men are put in the lead fr their own aggrandisement without regard to the permanent and true in terests of the party. If we are in earnest in the purpose to lift our country out of the Eloueh of despond, of misery, of poverty and revolution now B'alkirg hand in hand over our land, the democracy must do the work. If we remain under the selfish lead of reckless aspirants, how is this necee-eary necee-eary work to be accomplished? |
