Show A few ladies met at toe nouse of Mrs. Joanna Fatten on Frovu bench last Saturday for the purpose of or ganizing a committee of the Woman's Suffrage association and talkiDg over a few of the principles ot the association. The following committee was appointed: ap-pointed: Mrs. Jcanna Patten, Mar-gret Mar-gret Evans, Mary Skinner, Martha Adams, Pailanda Davis. They paid their initiation fee, and were consid ered members in the suffrage associa tion. Mrs. Patten read a poem written by Caroline Daniels, which was commended com-mended for its beauties in portraying the rights and privileges of the female sex. Meeting adjourned till February 19th, when the following program will be rendered: Lecture on civil government, govern-ment, T. J. Patten; select reading, Mrs. Evans; som, James Adruns; speech, Mrs. idutns; remarks. Mrs. Fatten; leading, Mrs. Davis. For a couple ot hours this morning Alex. Hedquist, proprietor of the shoe store on Center street, was chasing about the town vainly hunting a city officer. While doing so Sheriff Brown, who is practically always on duty .heard of the robbery that had beencommited during the night in Mr. Hedquist's store, came to the store and went quietly to work taking a description of the shoes lost and at once instituted a search for them. Later in the day the city marshal was found and Mr, Iied-quist Iied-quist was treated to a scolding by the marshal for not havinf, th9 back do ir to the store Detler protected. The cause of Mr. IL'dquist's excitement was that on coming to work this morn-ine morn-ine at S o'clock he found the back door to his place of business open and empty shoe boxes on the floor. An examination ex-amination slnwed that the building had been entered during the night and seven pairs of the best large sized shoes in the store taken. N:o c'.ue of the whereabouts of the burglars has yet been found. Mr. Iledauist will make his doors more secure during the night in the future, Forty school trustees and principals from different parts of the county, are this afternoon very seriously considering consider-ing Dr. Park's new school bill now in the hands of a committee of the legislature, legisla-ture, in a meeting being held in the council chamber in the county courthouse. court-house. Superintendent Christensen is chairman, and Wm. O. Creer, of Spauish Fork, is secretary. The bill, which is a very lengthy one, was read carefully as a whole. Then each seer tion that did not suit the members on any one of them was checked, and whe-this whe-this task was completed there were very manv check marks on the secretary's secre-tary's copy. They tare, as this issue goes to press, being discussed and resolutions reso-lutions of protest will be prepared and sent to the legislature. The bill is one "to provide for a uniform system of free schools throughout Utah territory" ter-ritory" and contains many very excellent excel-lent provisions. The legislature will be asked to enact these into laws, and to amend other law affecting the schools now upon the statute books. A county convention of the ladies' retorm class was held today at Frovo. The officers' meeting convened at 10 o'clock, presided over by Mrs. J. E. Booth, county president. There were twenty-live ouicers present, uemg iep resentatives from Lehi, American Fork, Pleasant G"ove and Springvilie. Encouraging reports from each local organization was given. A letter from territorial president, Hannah Sorren-sen, Sorren-sen, was read. Among other things she suggested a cheap and modest publication pub-lication for the dissemination of their principles, looking to the bettering of the condition of women. Mrs. Ellen Jakeman was asked to give some facts and figures with regard to expense, which she did, advising that for the present they publish choice matter in papers already established. The matter mat-ter was discussed at some length. The meeting adjourned to lunch. Convened Con-vened again at 2 p. m. and is still in session as this issue goes to press. Yesterday morning morn-ing they paid their bill and later the lady of the house missed a valuable pair of blankets. The city officers were notified. Still later in the day the blankets were sold by the lodgers to S. AV. Sharp of the livery stable for one dollar and in the afternoon one of them was seen in Duggins' saloon playing pool. Seemii-gly the fellows waited around to be arrested, and failing, fail-ing, got disgusted and lelt. The preliminary hearing of Mr, and Mrs. Euders has been going all day and is not yet ended. |
