Show We clip the following from the sprightly Logan Journal and it has both pith and point to it: The great St. Louis organ of republicanism repub-licanism which is being advertised by almost every country organ of the party in Utah, recently contpined the following editorial paragraph: "Col. Breokenridge should hare (rone weei In early life and grown up with Utati," i Notwithstanding that the Glole paaiosrat has never had a single word I of decent toleration for the Mormons as a people or as a church, yet the republican papers of "Utah are busy in the task of pushing its circulation here in every way. This constitutes a lamblike lamb-like turning of the other cheek which we cannot tolerate with any degree of complacen-y. It indicates plainly that they would stab the church and the territory to secure a single subscriber more, and the circulation here of a rabid republican paper. The territories committee is again lazily toying with the Utah statehood bill. It seems a singular thing to us that the bill, or rather - action on it, is deferred so long. We are not sur priBed to hear that the only opposition to it is from eastern senators. If so, why do we have good men, good democrats demo-crats even here in Utah, who pant with very eagerness to support every gold bug move made by these same fiastern senators. Is it because they stand expectingly waiting for the lightning of executive favor to strike them? The candor of every western man is open to suspicion who. supports the eastern gold -bug idea. - If this class of westerners were more numerous, or of higherrank and influence, we, none of us, would live to see the happy day when Utah would fling her banners of statehood to the breeze. The democrats of south and central Utah are standing in solid phalanxes for the next character fight between them and the republican forces, which will probably come cn in the fall over delegates to the constitutional convention. conven-tion. We cannot see that the, Braziilian rebels are under such an immense load of gratitude to the United States. Indeed we rather think that Uncle Sam had set his head rather Bternly against the rebellion. The Tribune need not task its beard over the situation of statehood as regards re-gards the democracy in the senate. It is the republican patriots in that body who are responsible for the delay of that measure. Thky haye a lhymster on the Standard Stand-ard and he is just now engaged in the task of sawing the heads off Governor West and Secretary Richards. It is described as a painful operation. It distresses the Tribune beyond m.asure that Mr. Richards holds the respect of his party as well as of the government. This need not disturb Mr. Richards, in the least. If the Tribune does not remove Richards that younz man unquestionably unquestion-ably has a political future before him. The sun can hold the storm king a whirl it seems. The bright beautiful sunshine yesterday was delightful. The Tribune calls Mr. Cleyeland "that old bruiser." This is unworthy ot the Tribune. |
