Gibbs asserts that his letter to BishoD John P. Wright ot Hyrum, Cache connty, did not contain the sentiments attributed to biai. I read that letter and I can personally testify that it did contain all cf those things cba-gel against , Gibbs. He furthjer asserts tbath'.s brother-in lawBishop Wrigh', ' turned the letter over to Modes Thatcher under a promise made by the latter gentleman that its contents should not b-1 made public, and Gibbs now accuseB Moses Teatcher of duplicity duplic-ity by charging him with having broken his pledge, I desire to stati heieand now, that G o. P. Gibbs' accusation ac-cusation of Moses Tb.atcl.er is an absolute ab-solute falsehood. Bishop Wright turned tbe letter over to tbe democratic central committee of Cache county and it was in tbe headquarters head-quarters of that committee that 1 saw and read the lettei. It was there by the coneent of Bishop Wright to be used in evidence that church influence icas being used in Utah politics A. V. Eobison. The Salt Lake Tribune is last becoming be-coming the mouruful receptacle of re-ligio-politico-three-years-after-the-act protestations of innocence of any knowledga that the "gun was loaded." Gibbs' death-bed repentance is tbe second of a hoard of such protestations of "I-didn't-mean-to Bcreeds that have been sprung almost at the last moment mo-ment before election All such abject excuses made now for acts oommitted three years ago.are so piiiable as to fill all honorable men and womou with B&ntiineuts of unspeakable contempt for the cringing cowards that make them, if that letter written by Gibbs lo Bishop Wright contained only the sentiments which he now dainiB for it, why did Bishop AVright consider it of sufficient importance to take it to democratic dem-ocratic headquarters? If the letter was not loaded, why the commotion of three ypars ago? And if the statements then made relative to the letter were untrue, why wait three years te correct ihem? Then why does Gibbs wait until un-til the last moment before election lo make corrections? And why does Gibbs do his blubbering in the Salt Lake Tribune? Why does he rush into print in the only political church organ in Utah? Does he not know hat his hob-nobbing with the Tribune gives turthur color to the charge of mixing church and state? There iB not a man or woman in Utah who knows of Moses Thatcher, that would believe any invidious and insidious charges of dishonor against the peerless Cache county apostle, and especially so, when made by an ex-ofiicio religious crank and fanatic such as the one who now defames him. |
