Show A FLNAL APPEAL. The late Brigham city incident found in the unfortunate utterances of President Presi-dent Cannon and which he solemnly avers were unconciously made, and the remarks of Apostle John Henry Smith, almost exactly in line wilh those of President Cannon, and the "chipping in" of that great, self-loving nondescript that has passed as the church dude for lo, tl ese forty yea rs Seymour B Young, have so disgusted and discouraged thousandsjof voters in the republican ranks, and not a few id the democratic ranks, that statehood is inperil. In the presence of this new and supreme danger, and at the last opportunity oppor-tunity and moment The Dispatch makes a final appeal to both democrats and republicans who love Utah; who have faith in her people and destinv to vote yes for statehood, and yes for the democratic ticket. The present Is the gravest time in the history of Utah. The cloud that began gathering a month ago has spread over the entire situation until theyery heavens seem to have partaken par-taken of tho gloom and are weeping oyer the burial of that freedom which has Eeemed so nearly within the grasp of the people. H .. The democracy of Utah stands solid on the declaration that church and state must be divorced. It has pledged its bpst and noblest efforts to that end. While others have scoffed at that which even the scoffers knew existed, de-znoor?cy de-znoor?cy has marched forward, in an unbroken phalanx Bnfl main? teinedj that ulterior influences have been at work. An over-ruling Providence Provi-dence has permitted the inmost thoughts of a h?art to find unconscious utterance as a testimony to the truth of this democratic address, and as an irrefutable vindication of the honesty and integrity of those who promulgated that address, and of the noble sacrifice of feeling on the part of the tena of thousands that endorsed it. The nation now knows just where the Mormons democrats stand, in the question of church and state. If republicans win this election, it will be justly charged to meddling eccle slastics, and statehood will be loBt. If democracy is triumphant it will be unimpeachable evidence that the Mormon people can be trusted with statehood. We speak in plainness and to the point. Voters can you not already see the letters forming on thB rugged outlines of Utah's horizon; letters that will develop and grow plainer if the election returns come in and say that Utah has gone republican ; letters that will form into the ominous and self-same meaning as those that greeted the terrified king of BAbylon? voters shall "Mene Men Tekel Upharlau" be writ on Utah's once proud escutcheon? The democracy's faith in the people of Utah s such that the mighty trust if placed in your keeping with confidence that it will not be betrayed. |
